Hello, I'm just looking for a little feedback to see if I'm going about things the right way. I have a partner in Thailand and we are collecting documents to apply for a prospective marriage visa to Australia. We will be including her 10 year old son (from a previous relationship) on the visa. Also, we have another 2 month old boy (my biological son). I am intending to apply for a citizenship by descent for him at the same time my partner lodges the prospective marriage visa in Bangkok.

My understanding is that my son will be granted Australian citizenship and passport and therefore does not need to be on the visa application? Is this correct?

Also, I am somewhat confused as to how long the processing time is for a citizenship by descent. At one stage I was told 3 to 6 months. Then I noticed on The Austraian embassy website in Bangkok that you could receive an answer within a matter of days.

To be honest I am finding this whole process quite overwhelming. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Call the DIAC office at the Australian Embassy, Bangkok between their 'client' hours 2.30pm to 4.30pm Monday to Friday. Telephone 02 344 6400. Outside these hours you will get a recorded message. Get clear instructions from them (NOT VFS) on the requirements for lodging an application for citizenship by descent. They can also advise you on current processing times.

Okay, on the phone I was told 5 working days to process a Citizenship by Descent. I checked the website again and there it says 10 days. Anyhow, this is a lot faster than I had previously been informed about 3 to 6 months. You can send the application by mail or lodge it in person at the Australian Embassy in Bangkok with payment of 3.800 baht. This fee also includes a passport for the applicant. I will continue my progress in this thread with both the applications I am applying for. Hopefully it will slightly reduce somebody else's headache who is going through the same process =)

Hi,I got my sons citizeship by decent in about 4 days and the passport about 2 weeks. It helps the spouse visa a real lot as the proof in the relationship is pretty solid with your child.

Thanks Carpy! So, im curious...did you apply for citizenship by descent first and then your spouse visa? I was going to lodge them both at the same time because it's difficult for my partner to travel to Bangkok and back with a newborn child. Also, does that mean you did not include your son on the spouse visa?

If your son has an Australian passport, then he would not be included on the application as a secondary applicant. My advice, get his citizenship first.

Today my fiance lodged both applications with the Australian Embassy in Bangkok together with bank drafts paid in full. When I spoke to her on the phone today she told me they charged her an extra 10.100 bhat for "taking care of paperwork". Isn't this what the visa charges are for? Has this happened to anyone else? Should I make a formal complaint with the Australian Embassy?

Did they give your wife a receipt?

If so, what does it say the payment was for.

Okay, I just spoke with her again. There was a misunderstanding about the amount. She was actually charged 1.100 bhat not 10.100 bhat. That's a relief! :) Yes she does have a receipt and she will text to me later what it says.

Sounds like two VFS lodgment fees to me, THB500 x 2 plus 7% vat. Whilst that doesn't add up to 1100, it is pretty close, and with email/SMS tracking it would be about that.

Anyway look at the receipt and let us know.

All the best with your applications too.

Did Citz by decent for my daughter recently. As i had a urgent dead line (school registration in oz), they cut it down to about 4 days. Generally in 10 working days it will be done if all your submitted documents are Kosher.

Once you have citz, in general he would need oz passport

Bridge, he said he lodged at the Embassy....if that is the case why would he pay VFS fees??

I read it that she lodged it with the Embassy. Many people refer to the Embassy when they lodge at VFS. Perhaps the OP can confirm this.

He hasn't been back on lately so I am betting it was the VFS lidgement fee for the two applications.

hope that clears things up :)

A bit snarkey from someone who asked for help.

I know that most Bangkok taxi drivers when asked for the Australian Embassy go sraight to an office I presume is VHS. When they are asked at the gate they get told it is the Australian Embassy. I presume you do know for sure she went to the White coloured Australian Embassy itself.

I dont believe that the VFS deals with citizen by descent issues

They do not but even when I got a taxi to the Australian Embassy I was thaken there. The guard at the gate said it was the Australian Embassy too as did several other taxi drivers my taxi driver asked. Few are aware of the difference.

And once there, they would have sent him to the Embassy ??? One would think so

Harry, can you clarify what you mean by the "White coloured Australian Embassy itself".? The Australian Embassy is a bright gold colour (there is a picture on the embassy website at thailand.embassy.gov.au/bkok/AboutUs_building.html ). Are you talking about the white guard box at the front gate? Or are you getting mixed up with another building?

Sorry about that the picture I had in mind was the white guardhouse where I had to wait outsicde for a considerableperiod until they could open the door and let my wheelchair in as it couldn't go through the turnstile. You are right about the gold. I saw the long pond and glass doors more.
