witold
The documentary follows the story of a little girl who escaped Vietnam during the war and was adopted and raised in the US. Now an adult, she wants to meet her Vietnamese mother and family. First half of the documentary sets the tone and the background. Second half is where it starts to get exceptionally good. Definitely one of the best documentaries I have watched in a while. I can watch it on Hulu but it may be blocked for some of you. http://www.hulu.com/watch/69787/pbs-indies-daughter-from-danang#s-p2-so-i0
ddhamilt
Wow. Simply incredible. It makes me thing of how well I am or am not helping take care of my own mother as she is very sick right now. And culturally how different I am as an American/Westerner in this regard. I imagine Thais, Filipinos other SE Asian countries are very similar to this overall, though I am making a rough guess. I know more Filipino because I lived in NYC and worked with Filipinos and hear from them similar stories of the families asking for money, or even moving over here, and we're talking big families. It's the classic individualism vs. familial/communal living, West vs. East. But also just people with material poverty seeking help any way they can to do better.
