The comment about the largest number of English speakers are bar girls is typical of the nonsense people actually believe, yes it would help to speak Thai, but the largest group of people who speak English are college graduates not bar girls. Where people come up with this kind of nonsense is beyond me.

I would disagree, the largest group of Thais who speak understandable English are the wives and step-children of English speaking men.

College/University graduates can usually read and write a little but speak none (well none that any English speaker could understand)

No, it is you that just doesn't understand the OP's topic. He is coming to Koh Samui which is a known tourist center where 80% of the women working or living there are involved in the bar scene in some capacity or another. I'm sure sbk can back me up on that. I believe she lives down that way on a neighbouring island. He is NOT going to be working or living near a university where there are lots of young women from middle income (or better) families. If the OP is looking for a little romance with a nice Thai girl then he is unlikely to find it on Koh Samui without staying there for more than just the usual tourist visit.

Believe it or not, most nice Thai girls do not date farang tourists unless they've known them for several months. Yes, there is the occasional pretty girl working as domestic help in one of the better hotels, but they are few and far between. Most don't speak English. And, believe it or not, there are a FEW that work in Pattaya hotels that are also nice, innocent girls. But again, they are hard to find and seldom date tourists. They don't want to get the bad name for doing so. Any young Thai woman who is dating a farang man in a city known for its sex trade will be automatically deemed a hooker... whether it's true or not. There was a whole topic on that subject.

I've got 3 friends with grown daughters going to university in Chiang Mai. I can assure you that none of them go out with farang tourists. Nor would they be allowed to without supervision.

Had no income mate. I had money I brought with me, but not much. I then got a job and have income now. And yes, all of my friends are young and reasonably attractive. Not super stars, just reasonably attractive. I.e. Young, not fat, well groomed, dress appropriately.

I've seen many that have failed miserably and consistently to make that perfect combination!! on occasion me included!!!

No problem refusing an attractive lady sitting in front of a keyboard, big difference when she is sitting next to you, encouraging and available, sun, sea, holiday mode, plus a few constantly topped up beers on board.

Also I agree, the window shopping in Amsterdam is no comparrison or preparation for Thailand at all.

I usually agree with you Ian, but not in this case.

1) Anyone that has ever worked in Bangkok gets labeled as "that hooker from Bangkok" in the village my wife comes from. I have to assume her village is Typical. I'm pretty sure they know what happens in Pattaya as well, so if they date a white man or not, doesn't really matter, just the geographic area they worked.

2) My friends (very bad men) specialise in picking up university girls around the Santhitham area of ChiangMai, they speak some Thai and are very good at doing what they do. It's not that hard, and the girls "parents and parents friends" are not informed about any goings on. Of course my friends are not tourists and play a longer game.

Well that pretty much explains it then Thankx ........ My relationships are pretty typical of dates in the us, asking a girl at the mall for coffee, ect. I have been married for a while but I never had a problem getting a coffee or dinner date before I was. Why do you think thai girls wanting to have fun with a tourist doesn't make sense ? My guess is and you sort of said it ...... is that you think that everyone looks at all tourists like they would look at you, and that's just not the case. You have those beliefs because they apply to you and you think they apply to everyone else. I am not saying it's a bad thing it's just your perspective based on your behavior, others with different behavior have a different perspective. A do gooder xian missionary for example would not have the same outlook at how impossible it would be to find a date. My guess is you can't even imagine a date without at least asking for sex ! .... and in that case your correct it would be very hard for a person like that as a tourist to find a date !

It is an interesting discussion but we are not focusing on the original topic. Yes, there are lots of nice women in Thailand who MIGHT be willing to date a farang. I'm 70 years old and I STILL have dates with nice Thai women in their 30s and 40s (not hookers). There is no sex involved because I don't want any with those women. But that's because I'm not interested in having a relationship, I don't spend much of my time in places like Koh Samui and other noted tourist centers because it's too commercial. If the OP just wants to have a coffee or light meal with some nice, young Thai women In a city like Chiang Mai , then I'm sure he will find them. But it's not so easy in Koh Samui, Patong beach in Phuket, Pattaya or the sleazy sections of Bangkok. Chiang Mai has a broader range of activities than most other Thai cities (other than Bangkok) and yet is small enough to get around easily. It is much easier to get away from the bar scene,and yet still close enough to sample it from time to time. What Chiang Mai lacks is an ocean beach and the full moon parties in Koh Pha Ngan. Actually, I prefer Krabi to either Koh Samui or Phuket for the beach scene. Although I did enjoy my stay in Koh Samui, I think it is over rated, and from what I've heard recently, over priced as well.

If I was coming to Thailand for the first time I would stay the first few days in Bangkok to get a feel for the country and visit the few touristy things such as the King's palace, the temple of Dawn (Wat Arun) and possibly a day trip to Ayutthaya. Then I'd take the three hour bus ride to Kanchanaburi and see the mountains and waterfalls, From there I'd head down to the Krabi area and the beach scene. Depending on the time and my pocketbook I'd head over to Pattaya for no other reason than to see what everyone is talking about. There is a great, off shore island (KoH Larn) near Pattaya if you haven't gotten tired of beaches. The ferry to Koh Larn only cost a few dollars and leaves every hour or so. The beach in front of Pattaya is rather dirty.
