Cabinet OKs changes to Customs Act

By The Nation

The Cabinet today approved the amendment into the Customs Act to facilitate imports, designed to solve the controversial penalty clause which irritate importers particularly the American ones, said Deputy Finance Minister Pradit Pataraprasit.

According to the existing law, importers accused of avoiding tariff payment could be subjected to fines worth 4 times of goods value plus outstanding tariff. The fines would be charged two times of outstanding tariff if the importers agree to settle the dispute with the Customs Department.

Under the amendment, the fine will be 0.5-4 times of goods value and outstanding tariff.
