PURNIA, INDIA (BNO NEWS) -- Eight people were killed and dozens more were injured when an overcrowded passenger bus overturned in eastern India on late Sunday evening, local media reported on Monday.

Senior Superintendent of Police N H Khan told CNN-IBN that the accident happened at Janakinagar in Purnia district of Bihar state. He said the bus was carrying around 90 passengers and was on its way to Patna from Saharsa when the accident happened.

Few details about the accident were immediately released, but CNN-IBN reported that the bus had overturned during the accident. It said at least 8 people were killed, while 10 people were seriously injured. Around 20 others received less severe injuries.

India is often the scene of deadly road accidents, many of which are attributed to reckless driving, aging vehicle and overloading. In new figures released earlier this year, India overtook China to top the world in road fatalities.
