Quick question,

When the (Thai) GF applies (in BKK) for a fiance visa to marry in the UK, does the UK registry office have to have been contacted before the visa application is made? i.e. Does the Visa application require documentation of a booked ceremony (at a UK registry office)?

Also, once in the UK, will the GF have to apply for one of these soon to be obsolete "permission" certificates?

Thanks in advance.

No, you do not have to provide confirmation of a booked ceremony; in fact you can't because the law requires that both partners attend the registry office to make the booking! However, you should provide whatever evidence you have of your wedding plans.

The certificate of approval requirement does not apply to holders of a fiance visa, so no.

You cannot book a wedding until the foreign national arrives in the UK.

Thanks guys, that straightens that out.

Posted on this the other day.

OK, a little more info in case it's useful to someone in a similar position...

After contacting Local MAIN Registrars near <<my town>>, in order to advise me, they needed answers to these questions:

1) When and where do you want to get married?

2) How old are you both?

3) Where were you both born?

4) When will you be arriving in England and how long will you stay?

5) At what address will both of you be staying when you arrive?

6) Have either of you been through any form of marriage or civil partnership in this or any other country?

7) If yes to question 6, what documents have you got to show the end of your marriage or civil partnership?

8) Have either of you changed your name in any way?

9) Are you related to each other by blood, marriage/civil partnership or adoption?

10) What nationality are you both?

After answering the above, they came back to me with the following:

Thank you for your e-mail regarding the responses to my questions. I can

now advise you on the legal procedures, documents to be produced and

costs involved in order for your Marriage to take place.

Firstly, as your fiancee is a Foreign National subject to Immigration

control, she will need to obtain an appropriate visa for Marriage from the

nearest British Embassy, Consulate or High Commission to where you live

before you arrive in the UK.

Secondly, in order that your Marriage can take place, both of you will need

to complete a notice of Marriage. It must be signed by both of you in

person, at the same time at <<this main>> Register Office. No one else can

give you notice of Marriage.

Before this can be given, you will both have to set up a residence at the

address you mentioned for seven continuous clear days. You will then both

attend <<this main>> Register Office to give your notice of Marriage. Sixteen

days after giving your notices of Marriage, your Authorities for your

Marriage will be issued. A notice of Marriage is valid for 12 months.

During the 16 days legal waiting period after giving your notices of

Marriage you do not have to remain in the UK.

You will need to contact your local Register Office

regarding how to book your ceremony there.

To give your notices of Marriage. You will both need to produce the

following documents.

For yourself:-

1. Current Full British Passport

2. Birth Certificate (if available)

3. Please retain your Boarding card/Air Ticket as evidence of travel and if

possible a letter from the person(s) you are staying with confirming

arrival date and stay.

4.Your original Decree Absolute if divorced

5. The fee of £33.50

For your finacee

1. Current Thai Passport with the appropriate Marriage visa contained

2. We will calculate residence from the arrival stamp in her passport and

if possible a letter from the person(s) you are staying with confirming

arrival date and stay. (This letter can be a joint letter confirming your

arrival)

3. The fee of £33.50.

You can attend <<this main>> Register Office, to give notice Monday to Friday 9.00 am to 3.00 pm.

There is no appointment system.

Hope this is useful to some one.
