Crime Suspect Confesses to Arson Attack on Former Democrat MP’s Car in Songkhla
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Police in Songkhla have taken a male suspect into custody in connection with the arson attack on the car of Mr Sirichok Sopha, a former multi-term Democrat Party MP for Songkhla. The suspect has reportedly confessed to the crime, though investigators say he remains evasive about the motive. The incident occurred in the early hours of 5 July, when Mr Sirichok’s vehicle was set ablaze and destroyed outside his home in Na Thawi District. Initial concerns suggested the fire may have been politically motivated, particularly following Mr Sirichok’s recent public criticism of a local politician. In a comment seen by some as provocative, he remarked: “The longer he remains in Na Thawi, the less the district develops.” Investigators believe this may have incited retaliation. Police reviewed CCTV footage from around Mr Sirichok’s residence and identified suspicious movements near the scene. Acting on this information, officers from Na Thawi Police Station detained a man at his residence in Moo 9, Chang Subdistrict. Under interrogation, the man admitted to starting the fire but provided unclear and contradictory explanations about his reasoning. Authorities continue to explore whether he acted alone or under instructions. Pol. Col. Nisit Saleh, superintendent of Na Thawi Police Station, confirmed that the arrest followed intensive efforts by the investigative unit, which was ordered to analyse surveillance footage and track any leads pointing to the identity and movements of potential suspects. While further details about the suspect have not been released, the case is being treated as a serious criminal offence with possible political undertones. The Democrat Party has expressed concern over the use of intimidation against its members and has called for a full and transparent investigation. The incident has raised alarm over escalating political tensions in the region and the threat of violence against public figures. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-07-07 -

Accident Falling Road Signs Smash Pickup Near Rama IV Bridge in Nonthaburi
Picture courtesy of Daily News In a hair-raising incident on Saturday evening, massive steel road signs plummeted from the Rama IV Bridge, slamming into a pickup truck yet miraculously sparing its driver from harm. The unexpected crash caused severe damage to the vehicle, prompting authorities to suspect rust and recent wild weather as the likely culprits. The drama unfolded around 6 pm near the entrance of Soi Chaeng Watthana-Pak Kret 9/1 in Nonthaburi province. Local traffic police rushed to the scene following an urgent call from a shaken driver, reporting that the signs had nosedived onto his vehicle without warning. Upon arrival, officers discovered the golden Toyota pickup with a crushed hood, while the heavy metal signs lay a short distance away. The signs, designed to alert travellers of nearby construction, bore warnings of "construction" and "200 metres." The lucky driver, Thewin Phromsaneh, recounted his frightening ordeal. On his commute to work from Soi Wat Ku, he was suddenly confronted by the free-falling signs. “It happened so suddenly. I’m lucky I wasn’t injured,” he remarked, relieved but still startled. He has since contacted his insurance to deal with the aftermath. Initial investigations reveal the signs were originally positioned on the bridge leading to Chaeng Watthana Road. Officers surmise that the potent mix of strong winds and erosion at the signpost's base may have set off the collapse. Authorities continue to probe the incident to prevent any future occurrences.
