Thailand declares victory over drugs

BANGKOK (UPI) -- Thailand officials said Monday illegal drug traffic has been nearly eradicated, but the fight will continue until Thailand is completely drug free.

The Bangkok Post reported Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said his nation's victory over illegal drug use was made possible by the people's contribution of physical and spiritual forces to protect their society.

Said Shinawatra: "We are now in a position to declare that drugs, which formerly were a big danger to our nation, can no longer hurt us. Many Thai people now have their sons and daughters back."

The prime minister presented 112 awards to agencies and officials who took part in the government's three-month war on drugs early this year.

During a ceremony in Bangkok, the Thailand Interior Ministry said a total of 82,247 villages -- 100 percent of the set target -- are now drug free. In addition, officials said 327,224 drug addicts have undergone a rehabilitation process, with 52,347 suspected drug traffickers arrested.
