Just something I can't quite figure out myself.

Why did the 40 year old female elephant fall down?

ช้างพังวาสนา อายุ 40 ปี พลัดตกที่สูงลักษณะห้อยหัว จนกระเพาะอาหารไปกดทับทางเดินหายใจจนล้มลง บริเวณใกล้น้ำตกบางเท่าแม่

On second thought, maybe I should be asking what happened as a result of falling down.

My best guess . . . definitely a tricky phrase!

พังวาสนา the elephant, aged 40, fell upside-down from a high place. She was at the point her stomach was touching the ground, walking to her last breath until she fell. It occurred near น้ำตกบางเท่าแม่.

Sounds like she collapsed of old age?

I looked at this and found it too difficult. Thanks for pointing this out I just assumed that พังวาสนา was her name and having established that, did my 'Russian novel' technique of ignoring it. From the dictionary I would think of it as going after ช้าง giving she elephants the title ช้างพัง .

elephant fell ที่ 'at' if it refered to the manner of falling it would it not be อย่าง? ลักษณะ..... (name ignored) until her stomach enveloped a ทับทาง I looked up and found to be a type of snake. Then on seeing that บริเวณ negated the need for a name. I gave up. I think that the snake died ล้มลง

Certainly shows why it is difficult to translate. The dictionary didn't help, only correct meaning is the one I couldn't find in the dictionary; ล้มลง

I picture the beast sitting down like some drunken fat character in one of Hogarth's cartoons.

Very interesting I see that you were right about พัง it is used without ช้าง sometimes.

The reporter finds the elephant with villagers in attendance นอนตะแคงคอพับ on her side neck folded? He interviews the official of จังหวัดกระบี่ who is a vet incidentally, responsible for the welfare of the animals, who explains that he thinks that she ate some bad food making her weak resulting in a heavy collapse coupled with the fact of lying in a position with her head lower from เนิน (raised up?) , Even though elephants are not tall they do have big stomachs. If in a head down position for a long time the stomach can impinge on the airway and cause death this way. Anyway an expert on elephants will be giving a further examination which will establish the cause of death clearly.

Fair enough, does the syntax show these variations? I think it is more important at my stage to just know who said what to whom. Seeing a picture from this description needs imagination. If you think that the stomach pressed on the breathing aparatus yuo may think that 'to one side' is not involved but if you deduce that the windpipe in the neck was constricted then maybe a twisted neck. come to think of it in the reporters description of her position he says นอนตะแคง means นอนเอาช้างลง not upside down.

เนิน (the noun) is a raised up earth โคก I see but I am not sure that a description of the accident 'come all the way down' its more static, ลงมาต้ำ 'lower' caused by uneven ground? It probably not as definitive as we want it to be.
