Japanese diplomatic vehicle attacked in Pakistan

2010-10-28 20:57:56 GMT+7 (ICT)

KARACHI, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) – At least two people were wounded on Thursday when a Japanese consular vehicle in Pakistan was attacked by gunmen on a motorcycle, local media reported.

The vehicle was in the Cantonment Board area of Karachi, Pakistan, near Cant Station, when the two gunmen approached the vehicle on a motorcycle and opened fire.

A security guard and an official of the consulate were injured during the attack. They were rushed to Jinnah Hospital, but the two have been reported to be in stable condition although their injuries were serious.

No Japanese diplomatic officials were in the car, according to a spokesman at Japan's Foreign Ministry in Tokyo, who also confirmed the shooting.

Local police chief Fayyaz Leghari said the unidentified gunmen opened fire when the two Pakistani consulate staffers stopped outside a restaurant after withdrawing cash from a bank. Even though the reason of the attack is still unclear, police believe it could have been an attempted robbery.
