Andaman News TV11 & FM90.5 Phuket 8.30am Wednesday 3 August 2005

The Thai Tsunami Victim Identification or TTVI centre, located in Chalong, staffed by police and forensic experts from over 20 countries, has now identified over 2,010 victims from those reported missing, including 90% of non-Thai victims. All identifications are scientifically made by either comparison of dental records, fingerprints or the comparison of DNA. With almost 1,800 bodies still awaiting identification, the operation still continues even with officers from countries that no longer have outstanding victims, including New Zealand, Canada and Norway. The TTVI teams remain committed to identifying as many of the victims of the disaster as possible, through hard work and determination, working with colleagues from the Royal Thai Police.

According to the Ministry of Interior’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, the number of bodies recovered in Thailand as a result of the tsunami is 5,395, including 2,280 foreign nationals from 37 countries.

I wonder how many of the 1,800 bodies still not identified are illegal immigrants (read: Burmese), whos relatives will be too scared to come forward......
