Obama congratulates the San Francisco Giants for winning the World Series

2010-11-03 06:02:13 GMT+7 (ICT)

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) -- It may have taken a while, but President Barack Obama finally made his call to the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday afternoon.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Giants had complained that they had not received a call from Obama to congratulate them after they won their first World Series title since 1954 on Monday. A spokeswoman earlier said that, even though they had provided the White House with a private number of manager Bruce Bochy's office, they were still waiting for the call.

However, Obama later on Tuesday made his call to the Giants to congratulate the management, owners and the team. He noted that he remembered the excitement he felt when the White Sox broke their World Series dry spell.

"The President said he enjoyed watching the game and congratulated the whole organization, including the pitching staff and young stars Madison Bumgarner and Buster Posey for their composure under pressure," said Robert Gibbs, the White House Press Secretary. "The President also mentioned that he wanted to find out if there really was magic in closer Brian Wilson's beard. The Giants invited the President to a home game and the President said he looked forward to congratulating the team in person at the White House."

The Giants ended with 3-1 in Monday's game, beating the Rangers. Edgar Renteria, who hit a three-run homer off Cliff Lee during the game, received the World Series Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award for his performance.
