MOSCOW, RUSSIA (BNO NEWS) -- Russian special forces on Thursday killed two militants during a special operation that took place in the North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, local media reported.

The special operation was conducted on Thursday morning at an abandoned mine in the southwestern region of Kabardino-Balkaria. In that area, known as Elbrus, Russian intelligence found out that a group of militants had been hiding since mid-October.

During the fire exchange, no member of the Russian special forces were wounded. The shootout occurred at a bout 150 meters away from the entrance to the mine. However, the Russian operatives were able to shoot down two of the militants.

One of the fallen rebels is suspected of being involved in the murder of local officials last August. Kabardino-Balkaria's authorities said that they believe that one of the deceased participated in the murder of people with the Federal Security Service.

The troubled North Caucasus of Russia has been marred with confrontations between militants and polcie forces . In contrast, Chechnya, another republic in the area and known for its frequent armed conflicts, has witnessed a decrease in militant attacks.

Under the leadership of Ramzan Kadyrov, a former separatist fighter that turned into a Kremlin ally, Chechnya has seen a reduction in rebel attacks in recent years. However, violence has erupted in the neighboring republics of Ingushetia, Dagestan and Kabardino-Balkaria.
