Obama backs India for a permanent UN Security Council seat

NEW DELHI, INDIA (BNO NEWS) -- U.S. President Barack Obama on Monday addressed India's Parliament and expressed support for India to have a permanent seat in the United Nations (UN) Security Council.

"As two global leaders, the United States and India can partner for global security - especially as India serves on the Security Council over the next two years," Obama said in New Delhi. "Indeed, the just and sustainable international order that America seeks includes a United Nations that is efficient, effective, credible and legitimate. That is why I can say today, in the years ahead, I look forward to a reformed United Nations Security Council that includes India as a permanent member."

Currently, the United States, China, France, the United Kingdom, and Russia are the only permanent members of the UN Security Council, which is one of the principal organs of the United Nations and is charged with the maintenance of international peace and security..

As Obama ends his three-day visit to the country, he also addressed military issues with India's neighboring Pakistan. "We will continue to insist to Pakistan's leaders that terrorist safe havens within their borders are unacceptable, and that the terrorists behind the Mumbai attacks be brought to justice," he said.

Obama is currently on a 10-day Asian tour. He is now scheduled to travel to disaster-struck Indonesia, before leaving for South Korea and Japan.
