You know, a panoramic road, respecting all the environmental standards (western), not too much invasive, with a very low environmental impact and with strict rules about the the size and the quantity of buildings allowed or not, could be a not so bad idea, but with the local greed, the complete lack of rules and of a real environmental awareness, I thing is better to hope this project will never start.

gotta agree with Samuian, you equate locals with greed in an unnecessary way. Some are, many are not. But, i'd say that most of the people who moved to the island to make a fast baht regardless of what kind of reputation the place gets from constant ripoffs, or of foreign developers who come and buy up large pieces of land, including that of national park in order to flog are perhaps more rightfully labelled as "greedy"

But, regardless of that part of your post, the rest is also a fairytale I am afraid. And one that is pointless in entertaining because it won't happen. god knows it rarely happens even in the West and to think it could possibly happen in Thailand is more than unlikely.

Anguid as previously mentioned the project seems to be underway as a dirt road has already been cut out of the hill at Haad Yao East.

Can't see it lasting long in this weather.

Sorry if you thought my posts were pointless. I will try to be more pointed in future.... >..<

I must have missed the part about building a ring road. Perhaps the reason it didn't sink in is that officials saying something about major infrastructure additions and these plans actually coming to fruition often are not compatible. I didn't equate: "all the "major" points on the island will be interlinked by a network 73 Kms long," and SBK's post: "There is no ring road on Koh Phangan and as far as I am aware any roads built to that side of the island are going through National Park. The only government roads existing on that side of the island that I am aware of is the one that runs to Thong Nai Pan," as meaning that a ring road was planned, but that's because I didn't think of a "network" as a "ring." I am such an idiot.

Let me try to say this again. Even if all the foreigners and well-intended locals who are opposed to any new construction of infrastructure of any kind band together and protest, make T-shirts, erect billboards, write letters to the Bangkok Post and so on, will not stop what has been decided at actionable government levels. Thus my proposal that it would be better to be on the inside, if possible, to influence the outcome of this situation (should it happen at all).

I agree with Angiud in principle. A well-designed scenic drive around the island could be a nice thing. Of course, in reality it won't be, but if anything is to be done, it will be by influencing those in power from a point of common trust and respect. A bunch of sarong-wearing, new age hippies alongside adamant young tourists protesting new roads by chaining themselves to trees and handing out flyers will not influence anyone in power. What could is to engage the international community of like-minded environmental organizations to make an effort to meet with business leaders and government officials to try to work together. That's just one idea.

How best to mitigate the damage, that's what ought to be discussed. Unless of course you think that is also pointless.

Since SBK seems to be the senior oracle on things Koh Phangan, I would be most interested to hear what she personally plans to do about this, given that she has said that she is opposed to it.

What is your whole purpose in extending this debate? Seems you like to play on words. Am I being correct here that you are starting conversations with the sole purpose of antagonising posters? It was explained to you by several posters what the position is & what is going on.

I would very clearly try & understand other posters / residents opinions before making off the cuff comments & belittle them.

This forum does not need TROLLS. I have warned about this sort of behaviour & posting before. I have no hesitation none what so ever in issuing warnings or suspending members, who are purposely engaging in such actions.

'If you can't beat 'em, join 'em...better to be on the inside and helping steer the future of KP than just protesting expansion that will occur regardless'

spoken like a true capilalist as you are, you know that anyway. Either you are a very old or someone who is set in his ways, or just an antagonistic **flame removed** who never knew how to run a business in his life, i've met people like you who bitch and moan about how it should be but live their life doing nothing, accountants are very good at this i'd put you in that category, wants to be a businessman but never had the bottle so pays a financial advisor to put his money to good/bad use,**flame removed**. Keep moaning TC smiles make people live longer and you make me piss my sides.

More than enough roads already.

I guess they want to cover the East side of the island (the most beautiful and wild), actually without a coastline road.

:(

i spent alot of time in a jeep going over many of these roads this year as the are being built. While it has provided access to many spots and there are some beautiful sights to be seen, i fear that in many cases these roads are merely creating salable land.
