Snoh saved by legal technicality

By The Nation

The Supreme Court on Friday cited the statutory limitations to dismiss a graft case involving Pracharaj Party leader Snoh Thienthong.

The National Anti Corruption Commission sued Snoh for alleged corruption related to the Alpine land scam when he was the interior minister in 1996.

The 9-member NACC made an unanimous decision to try Snoh in February.

But the NACC report was forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General for trial preparations.

The high court ruled that the case was actually lodged after the expiry of the August 21 deadline.

More than 1,000 Fetuses Found at Same Temple

An additional 1,000 fetuses have been discovered after 340 were found on Wednesday.

More than 1,000 fetuses have been found at Phai Ngern Temple in Bangkok, after the smell of decay drew complaints despite 340 fetuses having been removed last week.

The temple's undertaker admitted to receiving the fetuses from several clinics with which he and the clinic owners have been in alliance for six years.

At the temple, Wat Phrayakrai police said they were stunned by the discovery of more than 1,000 fetuses hidden in plastic bags in three warehouses.

They said they will discuss the matter with their superiors to find out how to manage the situation.

Abortion is illegal in Thailand, but it is permitted if the mother is a victim of rape, or if the pregnancy harms the life of the mother.

Army: Drug Rings Support Southern Insurgency

The Region 4 Army commander discloses drug dealers are financing the separatist movement in the South.

But he insists the overall situation with the unrest has gradually improved.

Region 4 Army Commander Lieutenant General Udomchai Thammasarorat stated drug traffickers in the strife torn South have been financing the insurgent movement there.

He said the solution to the issue should involve participation from all sides and the enforcement of the Emergency Decree.

Concerning cancellation of the emergency law, the commander said consideration should be made exclusively for each area and it will be possible only when the court and the police have full jurisdiction over the area.

The commander noted southern unrest situation has improved overall as statistics in the three southernmost provinces indicated a drop in the number of attacks.

He insisted on continuing with the implementation of the same strategies graciously suggested by His Majesty the King.

They include understanding, approach, development and royally initiated projects in a bid to help boost local income.

He went on to say he is convinced the police will successfully safeguard people during the annual Loy Krathong festival and up until the New Year's celebration as Muslims will also be joining the festivities.
