If someone is Applying for a UK settlement visa on The 23rd Nov. Do they need to take the new English Language test ? or does it only need to be taken if applying after the 29th Nov ?

The test requirement comes in on the 29th Nov. If you are making an online application, which you must, and can get an appointment for before the 29th, then you do not need the test. If you cannot get an appointment for before the the 29th Nov, then make the appointment anyway, for whatever date you can, but go to VFS as a " walk-in" before the 29th Nov and hope to be able to submit before the 29th. There may well be others doing the same thing, so daily " walk-ins" may be busy.

If you cannot do either of the above, and have to arrange the test, then please have a look at our website. We can arrange for English Test Centre to carry out the test for you, or arrange a Pre-test seminar. Our website has details under "A1 test".

Can you tell us about the test, I thought there were many kids of tests. What exactly is it? And what about the seminar, what value does it offer?

Thanks

There are indeed many kinds of tests. Briefly, UKBA require the applicant spouse/partner to have passed a test. The test comprises two elements of the A1 level CEFR test ( the listening and speaking elements only ). No reading or writing is required.

We ( Visas - Plus ) do not carry out the tests or the Pre-test seminars. You can find details on our website under A1 tests, plus contact numbers for English Test Centre who run the tests and Pre-tests in Pattaya and Bangkok. If you give them a call they can explain more about the test, and how the Pre-test seminars can help. Again, briefly, the Pre-test seminar will give the prospective visa applicant an assessment of whether he/she is likely to pass the test. As the test itself costs 6,000 Baht it seems a good idea to know if you are likely to pass or to waste your money on the test. I suggest talking with Khun Baitoey at English Test Centre, as she will give you all the details and advice you need.

Our experience so far is that the candidates who speak quite good English don't need much coaching, but all require a little reassurance and explanation of what is expected, which can be given in 15 minutes or so before the actual test. Those whose standard is normally short pidgin phrases will undoubtedly require a more intensive "seminar", which we also can arrange. (Might I just add that sponsors who habitually converse with their partners in "Tinglish" are doing them no favours are far as getting over this hurdle is concerned).

As a guide to the standard of English required, I would refer you to a sample test paper that our UK principals EMD publish on their website:-

http://www.emduk.com...e%20Booklet.pdf

The relevant part is only Part 3, from p13 onwards, but it doesn't give you much info as to the first 2 tasks. The first of these is normally a dozen or so personal questions, such as "whereare you from?" "are you married?" - and the important thing is for the candidate to answer in proper sentences, rather than just "yes" or "no",which doesn't get many marks.

For the second task, which is a listening and comprehension exercise, I would refer back to the first task in the Reading section to give you some idea of the standard required, not to be able to read it, but to hear and understand it. By the way, I read it much slower than the normal rate of speech in a news report or interview. If a candidate can listen to a 100-word news item on the BBC and understand what it's about, he/she will probably have no difficulty at all. The third "role-play" task is pretty well set out in EMD's sample. I explain it all before we start the test, and the icons alongside each bit help the candidate to remember. They are allowed to make notes during parts 2 and 3.

I hope this is of assistance. Please check out our website www.visa-2go.com for further info about booking tests with us.
