MOSCOW (BNO NEWS) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on Monday thanked FIFA President Joseph Blatter and the FIFA Executive Committee for choosing Russia as host country for the 2018 football world cup.

Medvedev said during a phone call with Blatter that football fans worldwide would not be disappointed. "Russia will organize a championship of the very highest standards and make it the vivid embodiment of FIFA's new vision for developing football throughout the entire world," the Kremlin said.

Blatter thanked Medvedev for his attention and said that the choice of Russia as host country fits completely with FIFA's policy. He called the decision a big event and said that FIFA is 'very confident' about its future cooperation with Russia on organizing the World Cup.

Blatter also passed on his congratulations and best wishes to the Russian people.
