London police arrest suspected killer of Pakistani politician Farooq

2010-12-09 22:26:51 GMT+7 (ICT)

LONDON (BNO NEWS) — London's Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) on Thursday announced the arrest of a 34-year-old man on suspicion of the murder of self-exiled Pakistani politician Dr. Imran Farooq in the outskirts of the city.

Dr. Farooq, aged 50, of Karachi Pakistan, was on his way home from work when he was attacked in Green Lane, within the North London suburb of Edgware shortly before 5:30 p.m. local time on Thursday, September 16.

After police were alerted of the attacks, officers discovered Farooq, a Pakistani politican linked with the Muttahida Quami Movement, suffering from serious stab wounds and head injuries. He was pronounced dead shortly after.

Farooq, also a founding member of the All Pakistan Muhajir Student Organization, had been living in London since 1999 in a self-imposed exile.

Following his death, riots erupted in Karachi, one of Pakistan's most important commercial cities. During the violence, a number of shops and vehicles were set on fire, but no casualties were reported.

The suspect, who was also arrested on suspicion of robbery in October 2009, was arrested at a residential address in Camden at 10:00 a.m. He has been taken to a north London police station where he will be interviewed by detectives.

Officials continue investigating the case as they are still in search of two men and speak to them in connection with the incident.

Officers previously issued an e-fit of one of the men, describing the man as Asian-looking, aged in his late 20s or early 30s, approximately 5 foot 5 inches tall, of slim build, with piercing eyes, a pointed, pale-skinned face, short black/dark colored hair, and a goatee-style beard.

The second man is also Asian, aged in his 30s, of stocky build, and around 5 foot 10 inches tall, with short black hair.
