Boys Blue Bar opened a little over a month ago. We've been there a couple of times and enjoyed it. I just happened to do a google search looking for Boy and found this link Info on Boy Blues Bar.

We also go to Brasserie Pub & Restaurant to see Took and his band. Unfortunately, he plays late (midnight) usually. He's terrific on the guitar if you have not seen him. It's by the river, North of Good View Restaurant. Here's a link with a map Map to see Took..

You could also try some of the following places

C U Corner - moonmuang soi1

Guitarman - near pornping hotel

Cafe Del Sol - next to guitarman

Rasta Bar - accross the road from Cafe Del Sol

Riva - Next to Mikes Burgers on the moat

All good places and you should be able to find something to suit.

If you play, you would be most welcome to jam at guitarman and C U Corner

If you want fun local Thai music and venues Santitham area has many, many such places (several tens at least) ranging from mediocre to good. Some already mentioned above. Santitham Plaza has several, also Oxide Pub, Chiang Mai Club, Buddy Bar (New), I-saan, NaeNae, just drive around, and see what takes your fancy. These places aren't exactly quiet  so easy to find.

Also,on Dam Pra Kot Rd, near Rajabhat University and JJ Market (near Lotus Kamtieng) have more of the same. Most have beer promos too - three large bottles of whatever for some in-feasibly low price!

If you really must do farangland places - my vote goes to Guitar Man! B)

Regarding Guitarman, is it opened? The last thing posted on their website is Sep27 and it says it is officially for sale as of that date.

Went again to Boy Blues Bar.. Boy had to run an errand, but Chai was playing and a guest person. It was great.

Came across a real fun Thai Band in Santitham last night, several young guys playing Reggae and scar/soul type stuff including a great trombone player, a trumpeter, bongo drums and several good singers. Quite a refreshing change from the norm there, and the guys looked like they were thoroughly enjoying themselves (never had such fun since "Arthur Two Stroke and the Chart Comandoes" :ermm: )

Dunno the name of the band as we were actually drinking in the bar next door :whistling: The bar is recently opened in Santitham Plaza and called Jaophaya (or something like that) sign is in Thai with a Bob Marley image on it. Will definitely go again!

This may be the same band as the one that plays rasta bar opposite cafe del sol.

I think i saw this band recently in Pai, we happened to arrive on a day they were having a Ska music festival. If it is, they were really goos and I would like to see them again so thanks for this info. I'll look after songkran is over and done with.

Well, let's try to get up to date to help people.

After the recent arrests of westerners playing music without work permits, who IS still playing and where?

Precious few, I fear.

For a more sedate mixed western (English language, Italian, Spanish and Thai - in my experience) - the new Tiger Kingdom Bar (two doors down from Mad Dog's away from TP Gate) - nice variety, friendly and not in your face - food is good and suprisingly not expensive.

Also, the old restaurant next door to Guitarman (corner) has been replaced by a new Ragae bar (think its the old Regae Cafe from the otherside of Charoen Prathet - i.e. moved across the road) - went there a couple of times end of last month - nice atmosphere, cheap drinks, Thai run bar staff are friendly (and enjoy a joke - especially if you can muster some Thai) - mixed audience Thai and farang. A few backpackers as expected. Pool table - no BG's other than those brought along for the (ahem) ride. I found the music and the group excellent - and very cheery. There was a drunk farang (quel suprise) when I went there last time, took a swing at another farang (drunk was maybe 30, very fat, and wasted - other farang was siting in a chair and looked not too bothered about it) who was laughing - couldn't tell from my distance whether it was a comment aimed at drunk boy or just a misunderstanding - anyway, barman (who I think is also the owner?) was around the bar and in fornt of him in a flash, only beaten by his farang GF who torn him a strip and promptly put him on a tuktuk (alone) and returned to bar with her friends (Accent told me she was Scotish and he was Germaic - he only spoke English, with an accent - so couldn't tell with his drunken slur whether he was German, Austrain, Swiss, Dutch, etc). No trouble. Five minutes later, whilst talking I knock my empty pint pot off the table, catch it and drop it about five times in a flailing juggle that failed - Barman appears (as if by magic) - I Kor Tort him a few times and explained I'm not drunk, just clumsy (in Thai) - to which he says "OK" (in English) pats me on the shoulder and a cleaner arrives with a broom - I then take a walk of shame to the bar to plead for another glass as my beer bottle is still half full - he gives me a plastic one. I joked wth him about a plastic glass, he laughed but said it was wise (cheeky!) - but still sold me another two bottles for me and dad. So, all in all - a nice friendly place, no trouble, good music, not too crowded, no pushy BG's, good beer prices, pool table, comfortable, plenty of tuktuks outside to go home. Music was mixed western and Thai too - covers but not the usual Rock ballards.

Interesting read Wolf. The bar next to Guitarman you refer to is called Cafe Del Sol and did indeed move from the other side of town, the name or theme never really changed though. It is owned by an American lady and her Thai partner and they run it together. The Regae bar is still over the road but not 100% sure if it is still open or not though.

Very relaxed place to hang out.

They are also having a Songkran party today from 13:00 onwards. Maybe I'll see you there :intheclub:
