Moderate earthquake rattles U.S.-Mexico border, no damage

LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) -- A moderate earthquake rattled the U.S.-Mexico border area on early Saturday morning, seismologists said, but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The 4.9-magnitude earthquake at 4.52 a.m. PST was centered in Mexico's Baja California, approximately 40 miles (64 kilometers) southeast of El Centro in southern California. It struck about 4.7 miles (7.5 kilometers) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the California Integrated Seismic Network.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center initially measured the strength of the earthquake at 5.0 on the Richter scale, but the quake was later downgraded to 4.9.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, although several residents in southern California reported feeling an earthquake.

Earlier this year, on April 4, a powerful 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck the southern California-Mexico border, killing four people and injuring around 100 people. Saturday's earthquake may have been an aftershock to that earthquake.
