SEOUL (BNO NEWS) -- At least five crew members were killed and seventeen others remain missing after a South Korean fishing boat sank in the waters off Antarctica on early Monday, officials said.

The 614-tonnes vessel called the No.1 In Sung was near Antarctica when it began to sink at around 4.30 a.m. South Korean time, according to the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The Ministry said a total of 42 crew members were on board.

The New Zealand Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (RCCNZ) said five bodies had been recovered, while seventeen others remain missing. The conditions of the twenty people who survived the accident was not immediately clear.

"It is not known at this stage what caused the vessel to sink or why no distress communication was received prior to it sinking," Maritime New Zealand said in a statement, adding that it called on all nearby vessels to assist in the rescue operations.

So far, the New Zealand fishing vessels 'Antarctic Chieftain' and the 'Janus' are taking part in the search. Three Korean fishing vessels, including the 'No. 707 Hongjin', are also helping.

A Royal New Zealand Air Force Orion may also be sent to help in the search, but Maritime New Zealand said it would take at least eight hours for the aircraft to reach the site.

"Weather conditions in the area consist of light westerly 10 knots, and a one metre swell. Sea temperature is 2 degrees Celsius," Maritime New Zealand said. "Survival times in the water are about 10 minutes without lifejackets or immersion suits."

Of the forty-two crew members, eight are South Korean, eight are Chinese, eleven are Indonesian, eleven are Vietnamese, three are Filipinos, and one is Russian.
