2025 Experience of renewing 5 year car license and 5 year motor license at Chatuchak Bangkok
The expiry date of my motorcycle license and car license have a two year gap between them. Motorcycle license has expired 1.5 years ago. Car license is about to expire this year. Today I tried to get them both renewed at the same time: Arrived at building 4 of DLT Chatuchak with the following: A. Original certificate of residence from ChaengWattana immigration (200B) B. Original health certificate from a clinic (150B) C. Passport photo page and visa page copy D. QR code from the online training I have a second set of the above except A. And B. are photocopies hoping they will be accepted for the Moto license. At building 4, you will find the special foreigner zone to your right immediately after the entrance. Took a queue and called to counter 4. After reviewing my documents, the friendly staff said that I cannot renew my motorcycle license because the certificate of residence is written to be for car license renewal only. I will have to get a second letter from immigration. She suggests that I come back with this so I can renew both at the same time. If I were to do so, the expiry date of both licenses will be in sync to expire 5 years from now. The motorcycle license renewal will require a 2 hours sit in course at 8am the day I come in. Alternatively I can choose to not renew the motorcycle license and just go ahead and book a time slot two days from now to renew just the car license. No videos needed and I can come in, in the afternoon. Time slots 1pm and 2pm available. In the past, I used a certificate of residence from my Embassy instead of from immigration. The difference is the one from the embassy can be photocopied and used for both car and Moto as it is not written on the letter what it is for. The one from immigration does, so it is necessary to pay for two certificates (200B x 2) -

Why do people want to live in Isaan?
Pretty valid question though; why do expats live in a region of the country where few would choose to. … posit because unawares farang got cajoled/ear-bashed into it. Personally wouldn’t have a woman dragging me around to live near her family, but each to their own. Some folk seem to like it there. -

Beating children
Parents usually give their permission to the teachers to hit their students at school (We certainly did to our son's homeroom teacher). But they give it to the homeroom teachers because they know that the teacher is measured and responsible, not some idiot who is going to beat a kid because they're frustrated and need to take it out on someone. The teachers usually only hit the kids lightly with a ruler, never hard enough to leave a mark, at least for our son's teachers anyway (He's in an EP with a very good reputation, so the teachers are used to dealing with children who have very wealthy parents, and it's a primary school too, in a countryside school or high school things might be different). When I was teaching at a rural high school one of the teachers was usually responsible for dispensing discipline. I never saw it with my own eyes, as it was behind closed doors, but the students were terrified (Although when they left his office, they usually more seemed chastised rather than looking like they'd just had a beating, so I don't think it was all that bad (But enough that they certainly didn't want to do it again). From what I did see, he only had a thin bamboo stick, not weighted etc, and so I don't think it could deliver too much force. I wouldn't be surprised if the students parents had given permission for him to administer punishment though, as most Thai parents would happily outsource discipline to the teachers if they could (At least that was my impression from talking to some of the parents). But in general, I'm a big believer in having the option of corporal punishment, but never using it. As you should always have something as a scarier option for disobedience. I feel that corporal punishment loses it's effect if used too frequently, and then it loses it's motivation. Just like how when I was at boarding school, if the prefects caught you doing something wrong they'd usually give you their own punishment (some type of beating or a physical exercise challenge), or you could elect for the official punishment which was similar to lines. The lines option was only very very rarely taken, as pain is temporary but lines take forever lol (And prefects would never properly hurt you, just cause a little pain). -

I hear you, and I get it. Not everyone’s path is going to be the same, and not every method will work for every person. But let’s not confuse “hard” with “impossible.” You said it yourself, you didn’t fail because the opportunity wasn’t there. You failed because the runway ran out. That’s fair. But that’s not a reason to tell others not to try or that it won’t work. You just proved the opposite: that with time and consistency, those platforms can pay off, you just weren’t in a position to wait. And that’s okay. You made a smart pivot for your situation, and it worked out. But that doesn’t mean the advice I’m sharing is unrealistic. It just takes what you didn’t have at the time: a longer runway, patience, and persistence. I’m not saying “everyone can do it just like I did.” I’m saying: if you can stick with it, if you do learn the skills, and if you stay consistent, there are real results on the other side. You even said it yourself — "Yes, I could've stuck with it and gotten bigger gigs." Exactly. That’s the point. This post isn’t for the people who want quick wins or guaranteed outcomes. It’s for the ones willing to take hits, adapt, and keep going, because that’s the reality of building anything worthwhile, online or offline. You made your call, and it brought you back to Thailand with stability. Respect. That’s a win. But someone else reading this might still have the drive, the time, or the freedom to build now, and I’m speaking to them.
