Three MPs injured after fight in the Ukrainian Parliament

KIEV, UKRAINE (BNO NEWS) -- Three Ukrainian Members of the Parliament (MP) were injured on Thursday after a fist-fight broke out between pro-government and opposition lawmakers, the RIA Novosti news agency reported.

The brawl began after deputies from the ruling Party of Region attacked members of the opposition who staged a protest in the chamber over the criminal charges filed against former Prime Minister and current opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko.

The members of the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc-Batskivshchyna alliance also showed banners that read "Stop political reprisals!" The brawl engaged about 40 MPs from the regions and about 30 supporters of the BYT.

As a result of the fight, three lawmakers - Vladimir Bondarenko, Vassily Kravchuk and Mikhail Volynets - sustained bodily injuries. They are all part of the opposition alliance.

Volynets, who was hit on the head with a small table thrown from a height of about one meter, was hospitalized with head and jaw trauma. Bondarenko sustained an arm fracture while Kravchuk was taken out of the Parliament building on a stretcher by a team of emergency medics.

On Wednesday, Tymoshenko informed that a criminal case was opened against her for allegedly misusing public funds. She added that she was ordered not to leave the city in order to appear at the prosecutor's office next Monday.

Tymoshenko lined with the opposition after her government was dissolved in March following presidential elections which were narrowly won by her rival Viktor Yanukovych. The opposition has strongly criticized the Yanukovych government due to its "anti-Ukrainian" and "pro-Russian" policies.
