I'm a little bit confused as to the amount of postage required for the thai embassy in DC to return my passport for my visa application.

The website states that $18.30 in stamps is required, but that seems a bit much and also I cannot recall putting that much postage (especially in stamps, meter is not accepted. http://www.thaiembdc.org/consular/Visa/Tourist.aspx

Has anyone recently applied for a 60 day thai visa and if so, what return postage did you affix

Thanks

Just to be clear, you are in the US, correct?

If this is the case, it is just a matter of going to the post office and buying a "Flat Rate Mailing Envelope with $ 18.30 postage stamp" from them. It is pretty clear that's what needs to be done from the instructions on the link you posted. The post office will print a single $18.30 stamp for you and even put it on the envelope. This is not metered postage as you would use at a place of business.

This is one of the quirks of the Thai Embassy in Washington

Their instructions use the $18.30 figure is because they want it done by Express Mail.

I believe it has to do with there reluctance to have to turn in outgoing mail to their normal USPS mail carrier since Express Mail get's them a special pickup

The Consulate in New York still only requires the correct amount of postage in stamps for the return of you passport with the visa. In dealing with the NY Congen I always just get the Priority Mail 6 X 9 envelope, advertised as "if it fits, it ships", $7.80 if memory serves correctly

But you had better follow Wash DC Embassies newest instructions and get the Express Mail Envelope when you obtain your Money Order* at the Post Office, since they are sticklers on doing it their way and have been known to delay a visa if the correct numbers of copies are not submitted

edit. * If you have to pay for your visa

I found my used SASP from last year and I sent it certified mail with with about $4.00 in postage certified mail. It was accepted. I was just wondering if anyone has experience recently with only sending certified mail and not $18 overnight. BTW, there is a waiver for $35 fee until March

As you said that was last year this $18.30 figure is new. They finally updated their web site, before they never required the correct number of copies either, and that is now changed

As I said earlier follow their instruction or go to one of the more friendly Honorary Consulates
