CLEVELAND, OHIO (BNO NEWS) -- A 10-year-old boy from Ohio has been charged with murder after shooting his mom in the head, local media reported Monday.

On Sunday, Joseph McVay, 10, of Big Prarie, Ohio, took a .22 caliber rifle and allegedly shot his mother, Deborah McVay, 46, in the head at around 6 p.m. local time, WMFD reported. An emergency medical team arrived at the scene to find the woman lying face down on her living room and pronounced her dead.

The boy reportedly came into his neighbor's house shortly after the incident and requested for the police, stating that he had just shot his mother. The Holmes County Central Dispatch received the report at 6:03 p.m. local time.

McVay's 15-year-old daughter was reportedly in the house when the incident occurred but ran out after the shooting. She is currently staying with relatives, while the Joseph McVay is now in custody at the Richland County Juvenile Detention. At his Monday court appearance, the boy denied the charges.

Local authorities are still investigating the case.
