Just came back again by train, I do this regularly just to get out of Thailand, not for visa runs. From Korat (Nakhon Ratchasima) the express train arrives from Bangkok

1:37 a.m. is the printed schedule the trip from Bkk should be about 3 hours anyway it always arrives here at about 3:30 a.m., 2 hours late over a 3 hour journey. From here to Nong Khai is about 7 hours on a good night. You get a sleeper not sure of price from BKK internet has prices and schedules.Google Thaitrains. This way you arrive in the morning 9 or 10:am early enough to get to an embassy if you had to. Thai trains are good, but late and the food prices are high.Pack a lunch.
