Maybe someone can help me out with some basics on adjusting a bike's suspension.

The point is I have a very sensitive back I'm looking for a set-up that will make the bike feel like it is running on a snookertable, so to speak (pool is fine too, it's just that there's less space). Now I have no experience whatsoever with adjusting a bike's suspension but based on pieces of information on this subject found on the internet I would expect to proceed with the rear suspension (see attached picture) something like as follows:

As for the damping I would expect to turn the adjustment knob counterclockwise (seen from standing behind the bike): damping less firm, smoother ride?

As for pre-load I would expect to have to turn the adjustment ring counter-clockwise (seen from above) resulting in less pre-load, a less pre-tensed spring, a somewhat lower rear end of the bike, smoother ride? (I'm 62 kg, add 25kg if I have my kid on the back)

Is this anywhere near the way to go with the rear suspension ? And do I touch the front suspension at all for this objective? Or are there other things I could change on a bike to achieve this?

Thanks!
