Never really had any knee, or other joint problems beyond a stiff neck.

But about 2 months ago I started playing in goal again, which required diving about on hard ground, and it did jar my knees in particular even though I wore protective wear.

Now my knees feel quite sore, and when I squat flat foot it's ok, but when i squat on tip toe they make a loud popping/clicking sound when I stretch up again, and I have slight pangs of pain.

Needless to say I've eased up, but is there any treatment I can start to alleviate the problem?, I don't think there is too much wrong other than they have taken a bit of a bashing.

Gluscosamine condrotin if you can get it, I know it's available here but very expensive compared to back home.. And no, it doesn't contain sugar as in glucose, but is a joint renewal product, I've had creaky knees for ages as well as every other joint in my body and also play keeper for more then 30 years the artificial grass is much tougher on joints with less give..

And icing them immediately after your game will also help with swelling and soreness.. A good Lycra material support brace is also good for that little bit of extra support while playing without limiting your mobility..

Yeah, I suffer from patella tendinitis in both knees if I exercise too much and agree with WarpSpeed, a glucosamine supplement will help. I live in Singapore and it is expensive here too, so I buy two or three 90 tablet packs from Tesco in the UK when I go back and that is enough to last me in between UK trips. Lots of white tablets in your bags could be a bad thing when travelling I suppose, but it is clearly commercially packaged and sealed, and I keep the receipts with me just in case...

yep that is a great drug, 1500 ml per day is min dose and i find the packets easier than the pills and the generic thai brand is only 500 baht for a 30 day supply. check out any health food store of RX.

I would also recommend doing various stretching excercises every day. About 5 years ago I started developing 'clicking' knees, which seemed to get worse when I was on leave in the UK i.e when I was not doing any of my normal exerecise routine (mainly walking or running). One of my hip joints also started to stiffen up.

About 3 years ago I started stretching exercises every morning and sometimes again in the evening. Now I feel a lot better, clicking pretty well gone and hip a lot more flexible. I would estimate about 95 pc improvement. I also take glucosamine, but think that the exercises are primarily the reason for improvement.

Thanks rak so ngop,

I'm having knees issues as well. What muscles are you stretching that help your knee? What kind of stretching exercises?

Thanks.

Hi

I have a knee problems too ( diagnosed as Chondromalacia Patellae or soft cartilage under the knee cap) which manifests itself as pain under the knee cap.

It usually happens to me when I exercise and build up my quads to the detriment of my medial ligament and this seems to mis-align the tracking of my patella (kneecap).

A week of medial ligament exercises always magically fixes my problem.

These exercises, done lying flat on back. are straight leg lifts, done slowly and gentlely, one leg at at time, with the ankle hanging loosely at an angle to the outside, 5 lifts per leg twice per day for about 5 days.

I am not a expert in this field, but have taken some routines from a book by Bob Anderson called 'Stretching'. Gooogle and you will find out about the book. I am sure there are lots of books like this out there.

One exercise I like to do (although not sure if it is that good for somebody with dodgy knees) is to sit on the floor and bring my foot up to meet my face. I started by being only just able to touch my nose with the big toe of each foot, but now a few years later I can kiss my ankle joint on the side of each foot.

I am working up to being able to put my leg around the back of my head ha ha ha (I am 57 years old)

Best buy a book or find a good website and get some ideas from that.

Good Luck

Thanks for the response Rak So Ngop.

I'll check this book out on Amazon. Could help me knees and other parts of my middle-aged body as well.

Cheers.

I take two 1000mg Schiff High Potency Glucosamine tablets a day morning/night for about a month when I start to get sore knees and it makes a real difference.

I also use Arthriten for quick relief of minor arthritis inflamation and stiffness.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I started the basic leg stretches and noticed an immediate difference. I'm going back to UK soon and will obtain supplements if GP thinks useful.

I can't find Gluscosamine Chondroitin Sulfate combo tablets in Thailand, I bought it in the US. However, Rottam Pharma recently launched Artrofort (powder form of Gluscosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate). Also, here you can get Glucosamine Sulfate (aka Viatril-S) in most drugstores. They come in both powder (1500mg) and tablets (250mg and 500mg).

If you take Glucosamine Sulfate, you have to monitor your blood glucose level closely.
