AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- A roadside bomb killed nine people traveling in a taxi in northern Afghanistan on Sunday, police and coalition forces said.

The attack happened around 1 p.m. local time in the Pul-e Khumi district of Baghlan province when a taxi struck an improvised explosive device (IED), according to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). The nine people traveling in the taxi were killed.

Among the victims are six women, one child and two men, according to a provincial official, who added that the victims were going to visit their families and relatives in northern Afghanistan.

Insurgent attacks on coalition troops and civilians have been rising in recent years. In 2010, more than 2,000 civilians were killed in Taliban-led insurgency and conflicts in Afghanistan, according to the Afghan Interior Ministry.
