January 17, 201115 yr My wife's Thai passport expired recently. She has applied for and received her new Thai passport already. The issue is her 10 year US visa is in her old passport. Do we have to go to the US Embassey to get her 10 yr visa transferred to her new passport or can she just carry her old passport with the visa and her new passport together?
January 18, 201115 yr Author She needs to carry both passports together. The US does not transfer visas. GotLost, thank you for your comment. That is good news for us as it makes the whole situation much easier. Not to suggest you are incorrect but it would be great if anybody else could confirm that this is true. Even better would be a link to some US Embassey web site confirming this info. I tried to find it myself but couldn't find this specific information. Thanks again

Thanks again MyThai wife's been in this situation for 3-4 trips to the U.S., NOT a problem at all, just show both passports, the U.S. Immigration officer will look at the visa in the old passport but will stamp the permission to stay date in the new one, along with the I-94. Don't forget to turn in that I-94 when departing the U.S., that's important. Usually the airline folks will pick it up at check-in. In some airports, or so I've seen on the www, there's a machine that does this but we've never run into such. Mac

Mac http://bangkok.usembassy.gov/non-immigrant_visas/frequently-asked-questions.html Q: I have a valid United States visa in an expired (old) passport. Can it still be used? A: Yes, if you will be entering the United States for a reason consistent with the type of valid visa you have. You should carry both the old passport that contains the valid visa and your current (new) passport. You must use both for entry to the United States. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx There's lots more Q&As at that url if you want to look through them.
