PORT-AU-PRINCE (BNO NEWS) - Former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier was released on Tuesday afternoon after being charged with corruption in Port-au-Prince, the local newspaper Le Nouvelliste reported on Wednesday.

Duvalier, who was escorted from his hotel by police on Tuesday morning, was released after six hours of proceedings, but must remain at the disposal of justice, according to his lawyer.

The former leader, also known as "Baby Doc," left the Palace of Justice in a car escorted by police accompanied by his wife Veronique Roy, the newspaper reported.

Duvalier, who led a brutal regime from 1971 to 1986, surprisingly returned to Haiti after a 25-year exile in France.
