Judging by the scorn and vitriol constantly directed at the Reds by many expats I can only assume that they enjoy priviledged positions amongst the Bangkok elite.

I feel really sorry for the poor sod who could not get into his luxury apartment because the road was blocked. To be deprived of his aircon, hot water, flush toilet, and satellite TV is criminal behaviour by these dastardly miscreants. Lock them up, throw the key away, better yet call in the army to exterminate them.

...........and what of the retarded Farang Issan farmer wannabees who found their wives in bars and will do anything to stay with their first girlfriend ever - what should we do with them - What should we do with the plastic English teachers whove just finished a Tefl coiurse and can now spell Shinawatra for the first time - what about the hippy miscreants who dont fit into their own societies - maybe the same as the two idiots who appeared on the stage in Rachaprasong spouting hatred about something they dont even have a part in!! Ive SEEN the Farang in Thailand - I know the sort that support red shirts an theyre NOT PRETTY!!

Oh dear I did not realise you had to be PRETTY to be acceptable  What an absolutely stupid comment! Talking of spelling, you should check your own :bah:

I am not a wannabe farmer, nor a hippy nor a plastic English teacher. I am a retire teacher of Physics and Philosophy, neither do I live in Issan, nor Bangkok, nor come to that Pattaya or any similar cesspit. You I assume do as you are, it seems, familiar with the types of Farangs who can be found there.

Nisa. Firstly I am not sure who "US" is, do I assume you represent a large group of people. Then I am not averse to criticism of the Reds and their ideology, it is the tone of such criticism I find offensive. Both the agenda and philosophy of the Reds and the yellows are evolving. I am sure both groups in retrospect can see where they have gone wrong. So to lambast either for past events is I think counterproductive.

To pretend the past didn't happen is not only silly but a guarantee it will happen again. As for evolving ... Although I don't support any extreme group, I haven't seen the Yellows head back to the airport but seems the Red are intent on using the same failed strategy with the only change being they are doing it more often. Yes, I could see why you want us all to forget about past events such as what the reds every day was a "peaceful protest" back in April. Forgive me if I don't forget as do the embassies putting out warning about their now bi-weekly "peaceful protests"

Edit: And "us" refers to the people here on this forum. But why wait for this rally, feel free to go back to past sieges of BKK and show me quotes where they proposed ideas to improve the lives of the poor in this country or showed concern for the people of Thailand as a whole. Okay, they demand early (immediate) disbandment of the government and when told there could be early elections in 6-months they declined the offer. Clearly their only intent was to destabilize the government and it doesn't take a genius to know why ... just look at all the pictures of one person worn and displayed at their rallies and the complete lack of pictures of a non-political person loved and respected by most all other Thais and whose love of Thailand and its people is beyond question by any rational person.

All I know is if the Reds don't stop this nonsense I am going to be tempted to petition all Farangs to stop employing bar girls from Issan. It can start with a propaganda campaign like they did in the USA telling drug users they were supporting terrorists with each drug purchase.

Please do us a favor and show us any quotes coming from this red demonstration that indicates they are protesting for more opportunity for the poor in this country. Back in April they wanted an immediate disbandment of the current government and stated clearly that NOTHING that there was nothing Abhsist could do to change this position They also refused the offer to hold elections early at the end of last year Now they are gathering for the release of jailed leaders who led them to a slaughter and/or to remember the outcome of their violent and lawless siege of BKK back in April.

Lets not pretend they want anything else then what they clearly state and what their actions clearly show

Please speak up for all the inequality but do yourself a favor and don't pretend these reds speaks for the betterment of Thailand Nor should you hate those who have worked hard to make a good life for themselves or have resentment for this who have been lucky in terms of their wealth.

Very well put, Nisa. The poor farmers as well as the urban poor have a legitimate cause, and I fully support that cause. What I do not support is a counter-elite group of wealthy businessmen and politicians who have hoodwinked those people into believing that they represent anything that will elevate their freedom or quality of life. Can anyone cite even one specific example that the Thaksinistas have provided regarding policies or programmes that would do anything for the people they supposedly represent? All I ever heard from those weeks on Red Stage was vitriol and foul language. I truly feel sorry for those poor people who were duped and have suffered as a result.

I would also suggest that any poster here who defends the Thaksinista/red shirt mob has been equally hoodwinked, but perhaps even more pathetically as they should have the education and means to see through it - much more so than a poor Isaan farming family who had to work hard to feed a family and could not afford the luxury of finishing school, let alone complete their studies at Chiang Mai's elite Montfort College.

Bubba.Policies and programs from the Reds are no more substantial or apparent than from the Abhisit government, even the Thai media is starting to notice this. I am far from hoodwinked, what a supercilious comment, perhaps the boot is on the other foot. Neither am I pathetic, do you make a habit of throwing insults around? I have had a very good education, thank you very much, I can see the sham and selfishness of just about all Thai politicians, irregardless of their colour. Perhaps you have been fooled by Abhisit's Oxford degree, I am not impressed. What is interesting is that many of poor who work hard to feed a family are also not impressed with his empty rhetoric, but then they feel the same about the Red rhetoric. It seems to me that neither Reds, Yellows or Democrats truly represent what the downtrodden and poor are thinking.

.

You obviously assume that I am a fervent supporter of Abhisit, or so it seems that is your platform to debate what I posted. I'm not. I'm all for a democracy that is not predicated on class distinction, but have I seen that from the Thaksinistas? Or from the Democrats? No. I see a power struggle by a new oligarchic elite who are exploiting the poor and disenfranchised as pawns, and I personally find that nauseating.

Further, I wasn't criticising "the Reds and their ideology". In fact, I would be the first to admit that I'm not even certain what that ideology is, apart from bringing down the current government, keeping themselves out of prison, grabbing power through some sort of mob force and installing Thaksin. I suppose they didn't favour a democratic means to that end, since they turned down the offer of an early election that would have occurred last November. I'm not even sure about that now that Thaksin maintains he doesn't support the reds and he "doesn't know them". One point you made with which I completely agree with you: "neither Reds, Yellows or Democrats truly represent what the downtrodden and poor are thinking", so please don't take my post as being directed at you. It was directed a red shirt/Thaksinista supporter here, and you have clearly stated that you are not one of those.

Here we go again.

This leave all of us wondering what is the aim of all these rallies? and mostly, why the heck is the gov't doing nothing.

Now we've go both side doing monthly rallies in the heart of Bangkok, wrecking the already fatally bad economy for business in the area.

Totally FUBARed.

I would guess it is to give information and make speeches since their radio. tv stations and websites are still closed by government.

Hopefully, they won't be making any death threats at the rally... like their radio does

The Nation - November 24, 2009

The Chiang Mai Provincial Court Tuesday approved police's request to issue an arrest warrant against Phetcharawat Watanapongsiri, PM's Office Minister Satit Wongnongtaey said.

Police sought the arrest warrant after Phetcarawat, a red-shirt leader of Chiang Mai, had made a death threat against Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on community radio stations.

It doesn't matter whether you are red, yellow, in the middle or you simply couldn't give a <deleted>. It's never going going to change. Every year since Mr T was ousted there has been big protests about the government (Red, yellow, pink, blue, brown) every year. There should be a new season added by the government called 'Protest Season'. For the Reds it is always the same time of the year, because it is the quietest time of the year for farmers, and it is the time when there is the least amount of work to do.

I agree with a lot of people on here about their views and feelings towards the Reds. It's bad enough getting around Bangkok at the best of times, but with a protest on, must be a nightmare. But for those that state their grievances on here about the Reds and the chaos that they cause around Bangkok, those same people shouldn't forget the grievances that were forced upon thousands of paying tourists.

Please don't post about the Reds paying for votes and paying for people to protest. It happens on both sides. The yellows were camped in for 6 months. Could you afford to protest for that long with out an income.

IMO who ever comes in at the next election (when ever it happens) will still be hated by one side or the other. The protests will still continue and most importantly, it will give us all something to talk about. I only hope that in my heart that both sides or all fractions can peacefully come together and point Thailand in the right direction. I love this country and it breaks my heart to see powerful figure heads within Thai society use others to insight hatred upon their own personal foes in order to gain an upper hand.

Don't create hatred, Break it. 'Keep Thailand Smiling' should be the new political force in Thailand. Fingers crossed anyway.

Nisa, if you can show me where I said "pretend the past did not happen", I will be amazed, nay stupified. Indeed I suggested that past events were a lesson to both groups, they have seen where they went wrong. I am not a holocaust denier, as you seem to suggest, I think events of the last few years should be kept firmly in people's minds.

Chiang Mai police arrested a front line member of the Red Shirt group - who bombed four places in San Kamphaeng district, according to the Provincial Police Bureau, Region 5.

Commissioner of Provincial Police Region 5 Pol. Lt. Gen. Chaiya Siri-amphankul reported that Theerasak Suwan, a 31 year-old resident of Kheelek in Mae Rim, had been arrested with a knife and the components to make more bombs.

Another Red-shirt Militant Nabbed

Special investigation officials have arrested another red-shirt supporter suspected of involvement in attacks on security troops during the crackdown on the political unrest in April and May last year.

Director-General of the Department of Special Investigation, or DSI, Tharit Pengdit, said Manop Charnchangthong was arrested in Nonthaburi's Bang Buathong district.

Tharit said investigators have obtained evidence showing that Manop was a member of a red-shirt guard team trained by Army Specialist Major-General Khattiya Sawasdipol, who was assassinated during the group's protests in May. Thairt alleged the suspect took part in the protesters' armed clash with security troops during the failed crackdown at Kok Wua Intersection

Why do the government keep letting these rallys happen?

Is so that the Red shirts can have a look at see if all the damage they caused is almost fixed? Ahh yes remember that place we burned down!

I think you'll find it's called freedom of expression or just plain freedom !

Try having a major rally every second week outside Buckingham Palace or in Oxford Street and see how you go !

These thickheads don't seem to care that the workers in these mega malls shops are mainly poorly paid workers fron areas they claim to represent. How many were out of work when they burned the buildings down and how many peoples lives wil be affected by this latest nonsense. Want to rally go to a football stadium.

Bubba said: Doesn't a free democracy include the rights of groups and individuals to freely express their views without infringing on the rights of others? Which democracy can you think of that would allow 10,000 people to regularly close streets in the centre of the capital, resulting in not only inconvenience and blocked roads, but also loss of income for thousands of others?

EXACTLY!!!!!!! Your "greatest" democracies in the world do not allow large groups to demonstrate anywhere in a city.

Does seem like someone , as posting above, is tunnelsighted...

In answer..... Is not France a great democracy ??? The riots in Paris streets in the past couple weeks.

Is not Britain a great democracy> The riots in London Streets by the students in the past couple weeks.

Not to even bring up those of years ago.

I would submit that the poster of the above statement has not done their homework. ....or is using a highly personalized use of words and their interpretation. In other words bunk and BS.

I think you need to do YOUR homework - those riots were to achieve specific aims - NOT to bring back a deposed criminal dictator!!

Oh dear do you really think that Thaksin doesn't want a pardon. He wants to resume where he left off with a clean slate. The only way he can do that is to get his cronies into power.

Why they only warn US citizens... ? And the rest of us are what exactly... ? :)

This is on the British Embassy Website

  • " On Sunday 23 January an anti-government (Red shirts) rally is expected to take place in Bangkok from the Ratchaprasong Intersection to Democracy Monument. On Tuesday 25 January, a demonstration by the People's Alliance for Democracy (Yellow Shirts) is expected to take place at the Makhawan Bridge, near Government House, Bangkok. You should avoid these demonstrations and any other protests.
  • Anti-government demonstrations are expected to take place in Bangkok on the 10th of every month at Democracy Monument (near Khao San Road), and on the 19th of every month in the central shopping district of Ratchaprasong. You should avoid these demonstrations and any other protests. "

We Brits are big boys and we do not have to be told to keep our heads down ha ha ha

And it was there at least three days ago!

No. It is so they can see what the yellow sirts are doing. They did not get arrested, did they? So why not go and look. Did you all forget what the yellow sirts did? I guess maybe. It seems to me that most of the people in BKK are prejudice anyway. And of I saw what I think I will get red lined on this site again. But oh well. I dont care. At least it is red shirts and not Musslums like in other counteries. RIGHT??????????????????????????????????????

I wonder how Red the families of these girls would remain once their daughter explained how she can't send as much money back home because her tips as a "waitress" have gone down significantly due to farangs not wanting their money to end up supporting people involved in the red movement. rolleyes.gif

Regardless of debating whether anything any group did in the past justifies the actions of an opponent group, to answer your question: yes, hundreds of yellow shirts have been arrested, including one of the key leaders, Chamlong Srimuang in 2008. Also in 2008, at least 80 yellow shirts were arrested for the NBT station takeover. Others have been arrested for the airport takeover, including five of the leaders last October, and two just this week.

Because even this govt. tries to show that it is constitutional democracy.

I think this thread will prove to be a fine example of the intolerance of the expats in Thailand and their total lack of knowledge of how democratic processes are meant to work

Well I have to agree with you that most expats don't know how democracy is meant to work. I personally can not think of one country where it works like it is suposed to. They all have a little twist to it.

As for intolerance I really don't think that is a expat thing when it comes to the red shirts continually going out of there way to disrupt private lives. I believe there is a huge part of the Thai population that is fed up with them.

These <deleted> have no consideration for anyone - and why is it the 8 people burned to death in the Central World arson have never been mentioned in the "91 killed' ??? Red Scum are running amok again and it needs the army to round them up or prevent the blockage of the city. Enough is enough - especially when you live in the towers around the area and cannot get in or sleep due to the insane noise from stages and speakers. When will Thailand wake up? angry.gifangry.gif

Thailand has been sleeping for hundreds of years - the people with money and powerful friends can do whatever they want without repercussion.

Unlike most people on this forum I think that is not restricted to Thaksin.

As this topic continues, there's a question I would like to ask.

Does any one really know what the Reds or Yellows are fighting for?

I, like most read this forum and like most follow the press. I also talk to as many people as possible about the situation, but every one has always told me a different side and a different point. Does any one actually have an unbiased view of the problems that are happening now.

Really wish you would keep spouting off with false information. First of all, I am in no way a supporter of yellow shirts or the airport seizure, but just to get the facts straight, there was no real physical damage to either airport. Nothing was even stolen from them including duty free. In fact, I had a flight the first day it re-opened, and everything looked completely normal. The check-in agent at TG told me that she had left in haste the day the takeover occurred, forgetting her laptop which she left under the counter. When she returned to work, it was still there.

As for your "go get 'em reds", you sound like you are lowering this to the level of some sort of football game. I guess it would be a re-match though. The Reds did in fact "go get 'em" in May. Look at what they left after their seizure of downtown.

I, like most read this forum and like most follow the press. I also talk to as many people as possible about the situation, but every one has always told me a different side and a different point. Does any one actually have an unbiased view of the problems that are happening now.

From what I understand, the reds are fighting to bring back Thaksin, although they like to tell people that they are fighting for democracy and for the poor, but I don't know how that fits in with their fight to bring back Thaksin.

And this time around, the yellows are protesting over a small piece of land near/in Cambodia.
