Hello,

I have a TOT (02) line that also has an ADSL hook-up. I believe the modem box says EUROX. Here is my problem. How do I set it up? And how can I make it wireless? Can I make it wireless? If not, I can always use the phone line.

My wife spoke to the maintenance office at our condo and they said we would have to pay TOT 3,000 baht to hook up to a wireless network and 500 baht per month fee. I am a little confused because I already have an ADSL box which connects me to the internet. I realize that I have to pay someone access but another fee to get wireless? I am not computer expert but it doesn't sound right to me. Can someone please explain how to proceed or steer me in the right direction?

Regarding the phone line. Do I need a special ethernet phone line to connect to the box and my Apple laptop? And I think there is a CD that I have to install. However, I think I may have misplaced it. Can I pick up a spare at Pantip? Or would it be better to buy a new ADSL/wireless router? If so, which brand is recommended?

I looked at the hook-up at my condo. The box plugs into a socket and there is a wire that seems to connect to the telephone line in the wall. The phone connects to the box.

Anyway, I would really appreciate it very much if someone could explain to me how best to proceed.

Thank you very much.

It costs 900 baht for ToT to make it wireless, I was offered it last week but opted for modem line instead which cost about 450 baht. plus the 1050 odd for setting up the line etc.

The whole setup including modem cost just over 2g's I think. the obviously the 599 a month for the subscription.

It was as simple as just plugging in the "programmed" modem (done at ToT shop) and waiting for the line to be ready. It sounds like I have the same setup as you.

Wireless is alot unsafer, I wouldnt bother if I were you. A wireless connection can be hacked in under half an hour, no matter how many times you change your password.

500 baht??? For what...? Aren't you already paying your subscription fee...?

Go to your nearest ToT office and ask them, they are always very helpful.

O.K...first of all you are right.. It has nothing to do with your landlord or anyone else whether you have wireless internet or not.

Regarding wireless being unsecure, that it really only true of WEP encryption and even then you need two computers to hack it. Hacking newer WPA2 encryption is far, far more difficult and was only recently demonstrated at a hacking conference in Las Vegas by one of the top hackers on the planet.

It will be pretty easy for you to get wireless Internet. Here's what you do;

1. Purchase a wireless-n router or access point.

2. Take the ethernet cable out of the back of the computer (the one plugged into the box that's plugged into the phone line) and plug it into one of the numbered ports on the back of the wireless router, not the one that says "Internet."

3. Plug the router in and power it up. Wait a few minutes.

4. Connect to the one of wireless networks that should now be shown on your computer. There should be one there if it is a laptop. If it is a deskop it might not have wifi already and you need a wireless-n USB dongle. If you are buying the router and dongle new they should both be "n" but other than that brand isn't so important.

5. Now you need to configure the router/access point. Check the manual for the address of the unit. It should be 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 or something like that. Put that straight into your web browser page instead of http://whatever.com, no http, just 192.168.1.1 or whatever it is for your router.

6. You should get a login screen asking for your username and password. It should be something like "admin" and "admin" depending on the router/access point.

7. Now you should be in the router/access point settings. Change the name of your network to whatever you want it to be and the encryption to WPA2. Set a password in that sub-menu.

8. Apply the settings. The router should reset itself and you're done, no logout required.

It actually sounds like you need an wireless access point, not a router since you already have one in the form of that box attached to the phone line. Wireless routers can be used as access points however and that what you're doing with the directions above.

There's alot of wireless-g equipment around, but it's less reliable and has poorer range than wireless-n, so if you're starting a new wireless network better to go with 'n'.

Good luck.

Thank you everyone. Your help is very much appreciated by me. I just found out some additional information and I realized that I made a mistake in identifying my set up.

I do not have ADSL. I have an IDSL line with TOT. If I understand correctly, it is 128 bites which is very slow?

I spoke with someone, albeit not much more computer literate than me and he told me that MAYBE the speed might be greater than 128. My wife called TOT and they said that I IDSL which requires a box (I have) which splits the line to telephone and access to the internet. I could pay 500 baht a month for speeds up to 6 MB but I was unclear if I could achieve this on my IDSL line.

Can you explain this to me? I was told that I could get a new line for DSL but it would be a 034 prefix. Does this matter or make a difference with the speed? If I stay with the IDSL line at 128 speeds is this speed sufficient to watch You Tube?

Thank you again for your assistance.

Any speed is enough to watch youtube, it just takes longer to cache the video.

The area code shouldn't affect the quality of your DSL connection - what matters is your distance to ToTs physical infrastructure. That doesn't matter with IDSL but it tops out at around 144 kb/s which is why it is crap.

Just go to speedtest.net and check your connection speed to Bangkok to find out what it really is.

From the sounds of it you live in the middle of nowhere and you've had this connection for very long time. You might get a better price by going to ADSL.

Honestly, networking is a pretty arcane discipline. There's not a one-good-answer for everyone.

Thanks very much TimeBandit. By a stroke of luck, I seem to be getting free wireless now. It only shows 1 bar on my Apple but it is enough to listen to internet radio and do my stuff on the net.

Appreciate your help. Thanks again!
