63.2 million Americans use smartphones, up 60 percent - report

RESTON, VIRGINIA (BNO NEWS) -- ComScore, Inc. on Monday reported key trends in the U.S. mobile phone industry, indicating that during the three month average period ending December 2010, 63.2 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones, up 60 percent compared to the previous year.

The smartphone market share was led by Canadian-based and Blackberry developer RIM with 31.6 percent, while Google Android maintained the number two position with 28.7 percent, up 7.3 percentage points versus September.

Meanwhile, Apple's popular iPhone accounted for 25 percent of smartphone subscribers in the U.S. (up only 0.7 percentage points), and with Microsoft's release of Windows Phone 7, the company accounted for 8.4 percent of sold smartphones in the country, while Palm had 3.7 percent.

The report also showed that with 234 million Americans ages 13 and older using cell phones, Samsung remained the most popular handset manufacturer overall with 24.8 percent market share, up 1.3 from September's numbers. The company stood over LG's 20.9 and Motorola's 16.7 percent, as well as RIM and Nokia, which accounted for 8.5 and 7.0 percent, respectively.
