Moving Back To Canada, Best Way To Post A Bunch Of My Stuff Home

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

moving back home to Canada (from Bangkok). Would like to post some of my stuff home as it's probably cheaper/easier than lugging it all on the plane. Don't mind if it takes a while to get there, but I'd like to find something not too expensive (EMS everything is not really a possibility) and above all, reliable. How reliable is sending stuff via surface mail from Thailand post? Is there a big chance my stuff will get lost/stolen in the mail? More emotionally valuable things, not $$, like souvenirs and clothes, but things I would miss if they were lost. My guess is I might have about 2-3 5kg boxes or so.

Thanks a lot for any info.

May work out cheaper to use excess baggage company or similar.

I have found Thai mail very secure....We have mailed many 20kg boxs from Bangkok - Australia. ...Cost is approx 2700 baht per 20 kg

You can take a third suitcase and pay for 20 kg. for about C$100 on a Star Alliance carrier. Otherwise ocean parcel post is cheap and takes two to three months to get there.

Most airlines let you check 2 suitcases at 20kg each, as well as carry on one...which is not weighed, but has a size limit. In addition, you can have a "purse". We routinely travel back and forth with 2 maxed out suitcases checked, on maxed out we carry on as well as a large day pack stuffed. Never had a problem and it is all included, and free.

I had a friend ship a box home a few months ago. She has done this many times...but it never made it. Registered and all. But I guess the same can happen with a checked suitcase!

Check what the airline will allow as I found a laptop computer, overcoat, a reasonable amount of reading material, womans hand bag and more are not part or checked in or carry on luggage limits. You may be able to carry more than you realize.

For sure. I've flown back and forth about 5 times in the past 2 years...each time with different airlines. Always was allowed 2 checked bags at 20kg each, one carry on as well as one "personal" bag. Which is either a purse, laptop bag, etc. We obviously take full advantage of these allowances!!!!!

Though this last trip I did make a mistake weighing one bag and had to extract a pair of shoes...only to "stuff" them into my carry on!!

Just put it in one large box and EMS the whole thing. It might cost a bit but will be delivered quickly.
