Blast hits near luxury hotel in Kabul, casualties unknown

KABUL (BNO NEWS) -- A large explosion hit near a luxury hotel in downtown Kabul on early Monday afternoon, officials said, but few details were immediately available.

A police source said the blast, possibly carried out by a suicide bomber, happened near the four star Safi Landmark Hotel in Kabul, about 15 minutes from Kabul International Airport. It is frequented by Westerners and wealthy Afghans.

There were some reports of gunfire being heard in the area after the explosion, although the official was not immediately able to confirm this.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said it was too early to determine if any of its service members were near the explosion.
