I used to run WinfaxPro under XP and later Vista but recently upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate.

Most of my Customers now correspond by Email but some smaller Companies still want to use Facsimile.

My old Fax Modem cannot be used with Windows 7 - cannot find a Driver - so I am looking for a new Unit, and I much prefer an External unit (I like to watch the lights to know the thing is actually working!).

Can anyone suggest a good, external, USB Fax Modem?

(By the way I know Winfax is no longer supported by Symantec for Windows 7 but there are several alternatives out there - if I can find a Modem!).

Many thanks.

Patrick

Edit : Forgot to add, BUS powered for preference.

Are your customers local or international?

Have you considered an internet fax service like Faxaway

Free incoming faxes with a US number.

I bought a cheap (B350) USB fax-modem from a shop at Tukcom in Pattaya. I'm sure you can find one in Pantip or Fortune Town in Bangkok, as well. I don't use it often. I only use it as a modem for my notebook computer when visiting my mother in the USA who only has 56k dial-up. It works with Win7 Home & Pro.

I just googled the info on a sticker on the modem and found this link: http://thesystem.co.th/price/normal_price/print.php?gr=

Move down/search for "MODEM Internal / USB," there are two fax-modems listed. The first is an internal (PCI) modem and the second one -- USB -- apparently is mine.

You can buy them online from the Bangkok Distributor 'Sanook Shoping' with your either you Thai credit card or Thai Bank internet funds transfer here at http://shopping.sanook.com/product/6793454 - Note that if you can't read Thai you'll need a Thai friend to help you create an account and search for the item as MODEM USB 56K Ext. FAX/MODEM USB560.

In the analog modem world you have two type of modems, the first and cheapest is the softmodem, which basically has no embedded control unit or software, the second modem type is the traditional hardware modem, which is basically a unit what can work without a computer (of course it needs a computer to send the received information, but the modem can establish the connection all by its own).

The first type, the softmodem, winmodem or another name, need software drivers for the operating system, basically because the operating system needs to control the modem and support it with processor power...

The second type of modem, the so-called hardware modem, doesn't need any special drivers, the operating system and modem communicate by sending another AT codes. And all operating systems support this type of modems, or you can find a add-on modem-dialer software for free. I use Linux and I have still one 'hardware' FAX/MODEM connected to a RS232 port to be used as fax...

MS Windows 7 supports 'hardware' modems perfectly... downside, now-a-day it's hard to find a modern mainboard that has a RS232 port (a port that most hardware modems use).

I have a D-Link DU-562M fax/modem that I bought from some shop at IT Square for about 300 - 400 Baht. It's bus powered. I just use the built-in Windows 7 utility for sending and receiving faxes.
