MOSCOW, RUSSIA (BNO NEWS) -- A suicide bomber and a second explosion in Russia's southwestern region killed at least 2 police officers and wounded another 20 people, officials told RIA Novosti on Monday.

On Monday evening, a female suicide bomber approached a police station located in the village of Gubden in Russian North Caucasus republic of Dagestan. She blew herself up just outside the station, killing one police officer and injuring several others.

Only moments after the incident, a vehicle heading towards the area where the suicide bomber had attacked was stopped at a Gubden checkpoint for a routine inspection by security officials. However, the vehicle exploded and killed another police officer and 17 others.

No further details were available, but investigations are currently being carried out.

Russia's North Caucasus is common ground for terrorist attacks and shootouts with local authorities.
