In arrivals now they are setting up a new system with what appears to be face scanners

,they have a small ball type camera which takes your mugshot. They dont say they are taking your mugshot though . they could explain this.

For thais going out using E passports they have a new system which is quick and easy.

the go thru a turnstyle system which scans their passport , finger scans, and takes their pic of the face. there are 3 cameras at differing levels to cope with all heights.

I noticed this when I returned through BKK this week. On the floor in front of the Immigration officer they have a yellow sign with black foot prints indicating where you should stand. The camera actually has some sort of tracking mechanism, vertically anyway. I noticed the little lens moving to the upper position as I am a bit tall. I assume this is some sort "war-on-terra" response? I guess they could be matching the scan to the passport photo (they do seem to insert the entire passport into a reader)? Or maybe doing face recognition against a database of known undesireables?

Heard that they compare photos when departing from any international airport in Thailand with ones from arrival to protect using stolen or forged passports in human trafficking etc.

All data is in central computer and can be sent to any airoprt at the time. Example: you fly in to Bangkok Intl. but you leave from Phuket Intl. they can check it in seconds.

In my opinion not bad idea as Thailand is in World's 1st position in this dodgy business...

I've seen that too on my recent trips to Japan and Vietnam. Logitech made webcam-like cameras on the immigration passport control counters. Seen a farang being instructed to stand on yellow and black footprint marking on the floor and told to stand straight.
