Unidentified gunmen shoot two U.S. ICE agents in Mexico

2011-02-16 08:12:02 GMT+7 (ICT)

WASHINGTON, D.C. / MEXICO CITY (BNO NEWS) -- Unidentified gunmen in Mexico on Tuesday killed a special agent with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and injured another, officials said.

The attack happened as the agents, who are assigned to the ICE Attaché office in Mexico City, were driving between Mexico City and Monterrey. Few other details were immediately released.

"One agent was critically wounded in this attack and died from his injuries," said Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. "The second agent was shot in the arm and leg and remains in stable condition."

Napolitano said the full resources of the Department are "at the disposal of our Mexican partners" in the investigation. "Let me be clear: any act of violence against our ICE personnel - or any [Department of Homeland Security] personnel - is an attack against all those who serve our nation and put their lives at risk for our safety," she added.

ICE Director John Morton said the shooting is a "stark reminder" of the risks confronted and the sacrifices made by "our men and women every day." "We are working closely with our partners here in the United States and in Mexico to ensure those responsible for this senseless act are brought to justice," he added.
