4 months ago I moved here with my Thai wife from Australia, she had been in Australia for a number of years and qualified for duty exemption. We moved all our household stuff over and paid no duty at all even though we had 2 TV's and few other items that by rights should have paid duty on. We used Wridgeways to do the move it was handled on the Thai end by Santa Fe. The Thai end went well but the people who actually did the packing Australia where not very good at all. I am not saying the whole company is bad but the individuals who did our packing put our fridge on it's side in the container which is a complete no no. We had a number of other items damaged as well, trying to get a claim through with them is difficult as they won't pay freight to get parts to Thailand that are not available here.

Note that you can bring in one shipment of removal goods once your work permit has been issued. There is a way to split this shipment into one airfreight and one seafreight shipment.

Consumables are not considered removal goods, and neither are luxury items. Used vehicles (cars and motorcycles) require an import permit from the Ministry of Commerce, and I am not aware of any such licence having been issued in the past couple of years. Of lelectric/electronic items (for example white goods) you can bring in one duty-free, expect the second (fridge, washing machine etc) to attract import duties.

We usually ask our customers to provide a list of items they itend to bring over, and then suggest which ones they should leave in their country.

Hi all...just wondering has anyone an idea of the cost of shipping a container to Thai..main details are :

  • My own 20ft container
  • I will pack
  • Transport from Newcastle / Australia to North East / Roi Et Thailand
  • Household items/furniture /tools/personal items...basically all I own...no vehicles

Estimate of freight costs, What duties are payable to Thai, Can I do my own inventory of items, Can I lock myself with my own locks - would it need to be opened by customs anywhere...Oz or Thai for inspection....

I note your comments Tom and Gary

Just after a heads up of what to expect. I haven't been in touch with any transport companies as yet, for pricing. Just throwing 'out there' for now. Any recommended freight companies and your feedback much appreciated...cheers and thanks all....

I did a container from Sydney for $2500, Thai wife so no duty. Customs will need to inspect the container so you would not be able to lock it. You will need to get a freight company in thailand to accept the container and bribe customs, then ship to rob et.

The Thai side ended up costing me about $1000
