Blaze kills 1, injures dozens at NYC apartment building

NEW YORK CITY (BNO NEWS) -- One person was killed on Saturday evening and dozens more were injured when a large fire ripped through an apartment building in Brooklyn, officials said on Sunday.

A spokesman for the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) said the fire broke out on the 4th floor of a 6-story building at around 6.41 p.m. Eastern time. Scores of people inside were forced to fled their homes.

The blaze quickly spread through the building, fully engulfing the fifth and sixth floors. "[The] strong winds make fighting the fire very difficult," the spokesperson said, adding that a total of 44 units and about 200 firefighters were at the scene.

By Sunday morning, rescue workers unexpectedly recovered the remains of an unknown, unidentified woman. In addition, 20 firefighters and 11 civilians were injured - all minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
