U.S. concerned by Libya violence

WASHINGTON (BNO NEWS) -- The United States said on Sunday that is "gravely concerned" after receiving credible reports that hundreds of people have been killed and injured during protests in Libya.

"We have raised to a number of Libyan officials, including Libyan Foreign Minister Musa Kusa, our strong objections to the use of lethal force against peaceful demonstrators," Philip Crowley, assistant secretary of state, said in a statement.

At least 173 people have been killed in Libya since demonstrations began on Wednesday, according to Human Rights Watch. The United States said, however, that there's no accurate death toll due to the lack of access of international media and human rights organizations. 

"Libyan officials have stated their commitment to protecting and safeguarding the right of peaceful protest," Crowley said.

"We call upon the Libyan government uphold that commitment, and hold accountable any security officer who does not act in accordance with that commitment," he added.

The Department of State urged U.S. citizens outside of Libya to defer non-essential travel to Libya, while U.S. Embassy workers are allowed to leave the country.
