Iraqi immigrant guilty of murder in Arizona 'honor killing'

2011-02-24 00:59:31 GMT+7 (ICT)

PHOENIX (BNO NEWS) -- An Iraqi immigrant was convicted Tuesday in Arizona of second-degree murder in the death of his 20-year-old daughter.

Faleh Hassan Almaleki, 50, ran over Noor Almaleki with his Jeep Cherokee because she had brought the family dishonor by becoming "too Westernized". She died after two weeks in a coma, Phoenix's KTVK reported.

Almaleki's Jeep also hit and seriously injured Amal Khalaf, the mother of Noor's boyfriend. Khalaf testified that Almaleki made no effort to stop before she and Noor were hit in a parking lot in the Phoenix suburb of Peoria in October 2009.

Almaleki chose not to testify.

After the incident, Almaleki made his way to Mexico City and boarded a plane to Britain, where authorities denied him entry into the country and put him on a plane back to the United States, according to CNN.

Almaleki was also found guilty of aggravated assault and two counts of leaving the scene of an accident. He could face 40 years in prison.
