New Passport , Visa In Old Passport

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have a B Visa valid til Jan 2012, stamped on my passport. However, my passport (USA) expires September 2011 so I want to get a new passport now .

How do I transfer my Thailand B visa to the new passport ?

Or do I carry the two passports around til Jan 2012 ?

Any insight in to procedure or where to get information would be greatly appreciated,

I searched site but was unsuccessful in finding info.

N

Once you get your new passport you take both to Immigration to transfer your current permitted to stay stamp. A consulate issued visa will not be transferred so both passports will have to be shown to use it.

Hi Lopburi3 :jap:

I have recieved my new passport and would like to take both to immigration to transfer the current permitted to stay stamp, would you be able to advise as to if there is any paperwork I would need to take with me other than both passports and also is there a charge for this service at Immigration in Bangkok? :)

Thank you kindly in advance for your help with this :jap:

Believe you will need photo copies for data page both and visa/entry/extension and likely departure card. No charge for transfer of entry. You fill out a short form in office.

:) Thank you kindly Lopburi, you are a gem, will update here if requirements change. :jap:

:)I've contacted the visa run company and asked if I needed to get the stamp first or just to bring both passports, I am awaiting further info from the visa run company but so far they mentioned to bring passports to border.

Is it possible I just go to the border without going to immigration? They would stamp both passports at the border and do stamps there? I have one and half page left in my old passport and would like to still use it up if possible?

Thanks again for advice! :jap:

You are supposed to do at immigration although some have had success at an exit point (but the information must still be transferred - your old passport is not valid for use). But also believe you could be turned around or have a long wait if karma was not good.

The US consulate will give you a letter to give to immigration requesting to transfer the permitted to stay stamp.

As Lopburi said, the old passport will be invalid (they punch a hole in it) so once the new is issued you cannot use the last few pages.

Hey thanks Guys for the feedback :)

Sorry to be a huge pain in the butt with these questions, I am near Victory Monument, it will still be the Suan Plu office I go to right? (four years since my last visit to Immigration)

:jap: Thanks Lop , Thanks TH

Only Chiang Watanna, Soi 7 is now available for normal immigration work. Suan Phu is now for boarding country nationals.

Thanks again Lopburi :jap:

PLEASE READ:

My Circumstances :

Visa : Non Immigrant B

Passport : USA

Renewed Passport because less than 6 months left on it.

I received my New passport from US embassy yesterday together with a letter to Thai Immigration requesting transfer of visa etc.

On advice here and others, I then went this morning to Immigration [a loong way ! ] where I had to fill out an application at information as well as provide photocopies of old and new passport together with photocopy of visa page and deoarture firm attached to passport.

I then took a number and quickly got called. I then sat with an immigration officer :

Who kindly told me this was un-necessary [i.e. gave me back forms n copies] and I just needed to show my old passport with Visa and entry/exit stamps when entering and exiting country from now until my current visa expired and I got a new one in my new passport

I'm not sure whether this applies across the board or not but if it saves you a journey it's worth it.

Not sure when this changed so no fault to posters above trying to help.

Regards,

N

It appears to be a change in policy but unknown to most even within immigration from fact Embassy and information told you to do. As this is about the 3rd report it would seem safe to just do on exit but sure would be nice if they would at least tell our Embassies.

Thanks for your concise report.

From the above believe it is safe to not transfer if on a 90 day visa entry. Am not so sure if the same would be true on an extension of stay. Has anyone done this from an extension of stay recently?

Transfer my visa/extension info was no problem.

I checked before leaving Immigration office and found that the stamp of a single re-entry was not tranfered.

They answered that it could not be done and I have to show (also) my old passport at any border passing.

I requested for a new single re-entry (at 1000 baht plus photo )

This happened at Korat Immigration about 2 months ago

You should not require old passport if current stay stamp has been transferred.

Only if you had a valid visa for entry would the old passport/visa be required on entry (to use the visa).

Update:

Recently back from the immigration offices at Ban Laem border where I took my 'empty' new Passport together with old Passport containing the Non O (Multiple Entry) Visa. I visited the 'Overstay' window where the immigration will take your new and old passport and transfer the current stay stamp.

Immigration will stamp you out of Thailand, then when coming back in, show both passports and apply new stamp into Thailand with a note underneath the stamp/transfer mentioning in Thai what page in the old passport the Non O Visa is located. The paperwork I took with me was a photocopy of both 'picture' pages of the passports, new and old, and also I gave a photocopy of the TM.6 Arrival/Departure card.

:)
