MAZABUKA, ZAMBIA (BNO NEWS) -- Riots broke out early Wednesday after Zambian police officers caused the death of two people watching a football match in a bar in the southern town of Mazabuka, the Lusaka Times reported.

Police allegedly tear gassed a packed tavern where people were watching the English premiership match between Manchester United and Chelsea, causing a stampede that killed two people. The victims were identified as Nasilele Kwalombota, 20 and Masauso Nyirenda, 21.

Riots erupted after soccer fans and residents of the area protested the incident. The police moved to disperse the unruly crowd forcing business to come to a standstill. Some shops were attacked by the rioters who broke windows, while the main police station in Mazabuka was also damaged, according to the newspaper.

The calm was restored after Mazabuka district commissioner Tyson Hamaamba said that police was going to investigate the cause of the deaths.
