Mazda recalls 65,000 vehicles due to spiders in fuel tanks

2011-03-04 10:15:50 GMT+7 (ICT)

IRVINE, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) --Mazda Motor Corporation on Thursday issued a recall on 65,000 vehicles in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico due to spider nests in rubber hoses linked to the vehicles' fuel tank systems.

The recall was issued for 2009 and 2010 Mazda6 after 20 cases were documented in which yellow sac spiders were found in the fuel tank systems. The problem could cause pressurization and ventilation problems in certain cars, and in the worst cases, cracks on the fuel tanks due to pressure, subsequent fuel leaks, and fires.

However, the problem has not evolved into any serious incidents.

The recall involves 52,000 vehicles in the U.S. and another 13,000 in Puerto Rico, Canada, and Mexico.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said dealers will be inspecting and cleaning up the canister vent lin, and install a spring to prevent the spiders from entering the vent line.

The safety recall is expected to begin on or before March 25.
