KUNDUZ, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- A Taliban-designated district chief and an insurgent were killed during a joint operation by Afghan and international forces in northern Kunduz province in Afghanistan, officials said Saturday.

The rebel chief for Imam Sahib district, Baz Mohammad, and another Taliban member, Qari Abdul Hai, were killed on Friday night during the operation, deputy police chief, Col. Abdul Rahman Aqtash, told Pajhwok Afghan News. He added that they had urged militants several times to join the peace process and warned that operations would continue as long as violence persists in the area.

Afghan district governor Mohammad Ayob Haqyar said the overnight offensive was conducted in Shur Tang area by NATO-led forces. Mohammad had led several attacks on Afghan and NATO military targets in the district, Pajhwok Afghan News reported.

On Friday, the International Security Assistance Force said a NATO soldier was killed when a homemade bomb exploded in southern Afghanistan.
