I will be paying for my wifes upcoming trip to UK. Neither of us are employed (retired). I assume I will have to show that I have the funds for her to make the trip. So the questions is (approximately) how much money would I have to show via bank book, investment accounts etc. on the visa application to satisfy the financial requirements?

I read a website before and came to the conclusion that 100GBP per day is more than enough, this being what my wife would show for her visit so use that as a benchmark.

Enough to cover your living expenses; which will, of course, depend on where you are staying.

£100 per day! Beano, where were you staying; the Ritz?

No 7by7, but I think that is realistic if someone was traveling to the UK, to include hotels/guest houses, transportation costs, sight seeing, entrance fees to places (Madame Tussauds, Dungeons, London Eye and Sea life around 67GBP), food if required.

It may sound excessive but like someone already posted "better to show too much than too little"

Also I realize the OP has not stated anything about where in the UK, or type of accommodation.

My plans for the UK involve renting a car for the trip down South for one day, returning it the next day, traveling around Somerset and Avon areas, then after a week going to London, again using a rental car, a hotel for 3 nights, traveling from the Hotel (Heathrow area) into London, visiting the above mentioned sights, food, altogether about 10 days so for my wife's visa will show more than 50,000 in the bank.

(not returning the car to the same location as I got it from all the time)
